Since 2007, all the worthwhile music is rated 7.5-7.9 - basically if it gets a seven, download it, it means the site doesn't know the band or their PR people and has no stake.

Hugely. I interviewed Rob back in the Heavy Vegetable->Thingy days (HV: most underrated rock act of the 1990s) and he told a great story about pounding a 40 of King Cobra to kill his nerves before singing backups on "Luau" and throwing it up soon after. It does seem like he had a fairly major alcohol problem on reflection.

Totally, you said something on this board years ago that sticks with me every time I click on Pitchfork's site. It was something like "7.0 means never having to say you're sorry." I'm pretty sure that was you.

Yeah I was probably wasted. But I have always paid more attention to the meek 7.x ratings b/c they mean the reviewer is either dispassionate, out of their element, or unable to find preexisting consensus to inform their take. Whenever they hold back like that, you know the record is probably a decent showing. I mean probably forgettable? But a better sort of forgettable, that could potentially become memorable, versus the beautiful people/novelty value/stylistic ambulance-chasing BNM bands win with every time.

This album was an entire semester. All I listened to for months. I was so blazed on it they sent me Aqua Kitty with a thank you letter. Good times.

I spent three days in our practice space learning to play this perfectly.

"Louder Than Bombs" is the pop equivalent of the New Testament.

I have a vague recollection of giving Dr. Dog a second try because pitchfork gave them such horrible and condescending reviews.

The actual reviewer (writer) has little to do with the final grade. The grade is an average taken from either an office or reviewer pool for the album. Which is why you have grades like 7.6 and why sometimes what's written doesn't really seem to reflect the numerical grade given.
