klipsch x10s are $120 on amazon right now, which is a huge price drop from before (think it was ~$350). to SVC, these are very small and comfortable.

I made the terrible mistake of browsing head-fi for some recs on earphones tonight. People actually carry around portable headphone amps. With iPods. I mean..

All I want is some solid in ear earphones to couple with a Sansa Clip that have decent bass in them. Not looking to spend more than maybe $50 at the most. Anyone got suggestions?

I've been using Nuforce NE-7M for like 2,5 years now. I believe they've got the best price/quality ratio out there. There's a new model, simply the next generation of 7M and they're said to be even better:
http://www.nuforce.com/hp/products/ne700mx/index.php
Image
The reviews, as with the previous model, are rave:
http://www.head-fi.org/t/526258/first-impressions-nuforce-ne-700x-earphones-iem-non-mic-version-post-your-thoughts-here
http://www.head-fi.org/t/535090/just-got-the-nuforce-ne-700x-but-the-left-earphone-cord-seems-loose
http://musicalmusings.themindofgame.com/2010/12/nuforce-ne700x-review/

Some poeple say they have weak bass. Actually I think it's very tight and fast and does not overpower the other freqs, it's right there when it has to be, not like all the time no matter if you're listening to bassless music or not. I'm telling you, those NuForces are the best you can buy for <100$.

Plus, the company itself is making hi-end preamps so I belive they know more about hi-fi than, say, Creative.

They sound great. I was considering HD 25's but got the TMA's as they are more easily driven by an MP3 player and the reviews on head-fi concluded that the sound was pretty much as good.

I don't know what your problem is, I guess you're a DJ and so trend aware that these things get to you. Isolation is not just a DJ environment thing, I want to be able to listen in work and in the bus etc without bothering others. And the highs and lows aren't really boosted so yeah these are great. I did DJ using them once so I guess I'm a DJ after all though 8-)

Maybe late but it sounds like your plug has worn down... The gold plug on the 7506's can wear down easily compared to nickel if you are often plugging and unplugging the headphones.

FYI its an easy 10 minute repair to replace the plug and costs $5.
RadioShack® Gold Series 1/8" Stereo Plug

I actually replaced mine this week and they are up and running perfectly. Clip the old plug off, strip and expose 1/2" of wire. There will be three micro wires contained in a fabric covering, bronze, red, and green. Make sure you place the jacket/plastic shield/springy end of the plug on the wire first before soldering the plug! The three wires have acrylic coating (adds to the color) that must be removed for solder to successfully bind. Use a lighter/match to burn the tips of the three wires. Then its all a matter of soldering the wires to the correct spots on the plug.

Red - Ring (Right Channel)
Green - Tip (Left Channel)
Bronze - Sleeve (Ground)

Pull the plastic shield up and over your work then thumbscrew the jacket back on. Done.

IRT thread: Sony MDR-7506's and Grado SR-60 or 80's are often named as the entry-level headphone for people looking to spend ~$100. I have a pair of both and find the Grados to be very uncomfortable but have better sound quality. My MDR-7506's on the other hand are super comfy after hours of use. Mine have custom velour pads that I added because the stock vinyl pads are horrific and cause sweaty ears in the summer.

EDIT: MDR-7506 Velour earpads

I own a pair of TMA-1s, so I'm obviously not just avoiding the trend (whatever that means). I just don't think they're ideal for every day listening.

Application is also something to take into consideration. I find closed headphones more comfortable in public places like libraries where I can fully enjoy my music without disturbing others.

EDIT: Although I guess some closed headphones have more sound leakage than others... Pah.

my 7506's pads just started to break down this month after 2 years of heavy use (8+ hours a day at work), this will be a great gift to myself -- many thanks

I agree. I'm just saying there are better closed and semi-open options than most DJ headphones in terms of casual listening (public or private). That's all.

shirts optional,

It can feel like you are using too much force when slipping the replacement earpads on but dont be too afraid to give them a little ooomph.

You are in for a treat. 8-)

EDIT: Mine are actually manufactured by Beyerdynamic but they look identical to what I already linked.

can someone recc a pair of under $40 or 30 earbuds for my gf's sister? soemthing decent for the price? i usually buy these cheapo ones from buy.com but they have a tendency to break after a few months, even though they sound really great for 8 bucks.

Headroom likes those Sennheisers. Sennheiser-cx-300-ii-black

I dont know much about in-ear headphones but I found these to be stylish and have good reviews: IESW101B Inner-ear Stereo Earphone or Thinksound ts01

Headroom quotes:
Bargain-loving listeners expecting the performance of in-ear monitors at two-to-three times of the price of the Woodees iESW101B won't be disappointed in the sound nor the cool Umber Stain with gold/copper trim cosmetics of these real natural-wood gems. The nifty tangle-free cord eliminates having to unravel that dreaded bird's nest of cabling everytime you want to use your cans. Efficient 16 Ohms impedance ensures perfect compatibility with any iPod, iPad, MP3 player device or mobile audio source of your choosing.

Thinksound takes the next step in 'sound with a conscience' offering headphones and packaging made of recycled and renewable materials with the smallest eco-footprint possible. Real wood earpiece housings deliver not just a clean green manufacturing approach but also crisp accurate music reproduction with a minimum of earpiece housing vibration artifacts. Cool innovative stuff from New Hampshire-based headphone company. Choose your color.

Head-Fi user review

Personally just I'd take the Thinksound earbuds because they are cheap and look great. I cant stand most of the flashy plastic designs on most earbuds.

Finally got a pair of Grado SR80i's today, loving them so far. Comfort is better than I expected, and of course the sound is awesome - my first impressions over my Sennheiser HD497's and Sony MDR-7506's is that the sound stage feels more 'expansive' on the Grados, like I can distinguish individual parts of a song better. I'm only a couple hours in so they're not burned in yet or anything. And man, they do leak sound like crazy so I'll still have to find some earbuds for the train and such.

Nope, still got the 7506's. The right earphone has a loose connection somewhere that I need to see about getting fixed, though.

It always amuses me that whenever I'm watching a movie or behind the scenes stuff and someone is wearing headphones it feels like they're always the 7506's

Hoping a pair of SR80i's are under the tree tomorrow. Concerned about the comfort factor as well, so it's encouraging to hear positive feedback.

Might splurge for these either way:

Hey guys, I read through the thread but would still like a good rec on some headphones. I'm a musician and am looking for something comfortable, clear, and noise-cancelling so I can listen to tracks I've recorded. Lemme know what you think.

Thanks!

I get about three hours of sustained use out of my bowl-equipped Grados before my ears start hurting and I need to give them a break. In practice it's rarely an issue.

Brainwavz m1 are supposed to be good but light on bass. They're $35.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004IK2EAW

I got a pair of their M2 iems for cheap a while back and they're solid: decent highs and good bass, warm but not too colored. They're $50ish from Amazon. Monster sells refurb Turbines from their outlet store for $50, and they're better but refurb isn't the best look for a gift.

ok, i have $150 to spend at Best Buy and i'd like to get a pair of over-the-ear headphones to compliment my inner ear Klipsch Image S4s.

so far these 2 seem the most promising from those that are available in the store:

Sennheiser PX360

Klipsch Image One

but can someone who is both awake and in the know throw me a recommendation before i roll to the store?

actually, fuck it. i just need to know a few of the best bang-for-your-buck, over-the-ear headphones for $150 or less. went to Best Buy and they didn't have anything in the store except for the Klipsch Image Ones, which were on-the-ear rather than over, and sounded really "meh" to me.

Amazon has the Sennheiser HD558s for $144.40, seems like maybe the best deal but i'm clueless here.
