my classes are pretty great. they've responded well, for the most part. first project's due next week, so we'll see how well they're actually doing.

the only thing is that i'm spending too much time preparing for class, cutting into my thesis hours :/

yes, i would have, the firm pay the fees and a living allowance. by all accounts if you are a corporate lawyer, love money and hate not being at work they are a good place to be. i applied because i was an english literature graduate with no better ideas, not out of any real desire to practice as a solicitor
the spirit of this thread is the total death-wish. it frightens me. people are laughing about this, because they are idiots, just idiots.

you must have a stellar BA!

5 years in london is an unfortunate colonial hangover rite of passage for lawyers here before doing postgrad, so i'm almost certainly bound for it. figure i can endure 5 years of biglaw and stellar pay before heading to the east coast for school

I'm a few weeks into HBS. Struggling not to punch everyone in the face. I'm vacillating between tolerating it since it's only 2 years and you make bank after graduating, and just dropping out and moving to SF for "fun".

98% of the value of a good MBA is just the signalling effect of getting in + networking. So long as you really work those sponsored mixers for a term you could probably drop out, move to SF and then claim that you were better than the others precisely because you realized this and had the fucking balls to do something about it.
all of which are American dreams

well that part is good but the revisions are extremely hard to do and it's coauthored and at a low tier journal

i took some math classes at MIT while working in a lab there to strengthen my math background for applying to graduate school. 200 MIT freshman and me. it was very difficult to not want to punch everyone in the face.

So I have a stipend to attend conferences each year, and I'm going to miss my big annual disciplinary conference and my regional speciality one. So now I have some sweet travel money burning a hole in my pocket. There's a geography conference in L.A. in the spring, and I have some friends in Santa Barbara that I've been wanting to visit, but the panel that I would submit to is run by a couple of grad students.

So, do I commit to a grad-run panel for a conference where I wont know anybody but then I can visit my friends, or do I hold out for something else. I can't even think of anything other one to attend. I guess I can just skip everything but my panel and go do something cool in LA.

If you're already missing the most important conferences to you and this is nothing but a line on the cv, I say go for it. Will it use up all of our money?

If any of you guys are doing education programs and rely on ERIC for research, you are completely boned for the next month since they took a big chunk of their full-text down

yea I can probably use up most of it anyway

the more I think about it the more sense it makes. This will be like the one time I can bail on a conference and not feel guilty about it, and who knows maybe I'll make some new academia pals

I just got a panel accepted at ISA in spring in San Francisco. I was told that I would be one of a few grad students presenting a paper on this panel, but it turns out that it is just going to be a bunch of people who have authored award winning books and me, pretty exciting but also real intimidating.
