doing the grad school thing

Jesus christ you have to be kidding me.

Postby Guy Incognito » Tue May 22, 2012 1:09 am

a PHD in history is worth some shit (though not as much as i'd like) but yeah, a master's with limited practical experience is only for impressing your friends.

i'm sure to find adjunct/CC jobs it's a little easier in rural tennessee than it is in a mid-major US city

165 verbal, 161 quant, and I destroyed the essays. Hopefully know the percentiles soon.

woah I have no idea what the new scores mean

edit: I guess those are in the upper decile, which looks good probably. I wonder how those convert to the 800 scale

The new scores are 130-170 each for verbal and quant, plus two essays on a 0-6 scale. I did 2 verbal sections and 3 quant. Since it's new, there's no past performance to compare to, so I'm stuck waiting until my real results arrive.

If I didn't get 6's on those essays, the world isn't worth living in.

I got a bad essay score but I don't think most programs care about that - the things they are looking for are kinda arbitrary and do not signify anything better than a writing sample would

teaching fall semester for the first time is glorious. i have memories of students being nervous and eager to learn

it's spring/winter semester when everything goes wrong and the students become cynical and impatient with your shit

yeah i mean political debate really gets some instructors going, and i think that's great. i tend to do the same sort of apolitical disguising of my true opinions, but i had a really bad experience one semester where a conservative contingent of my class argued with my every point, and that made me reconsider the value of pretending i don't have my own political point of view. not that i have any alternative.

most of the conservative kids are kind of quiet, and I like when the libertarian ones talk a lot because they start to work through the problems with libertarianism

I've partially filled out applications like 10 times and then balked at completing them

So my company recently announced that they would start paying for grad school again based on grades 100% for an A, 50% for a B. The idea of getting an MBA is something I have been playing with for the past year or so, but I would still need to take the gmat. I should have just taken it right out of school when I still remembered how to do math...

I haven't had to study for something in a while, this is gonna be awful.

Is there anything logical for graduate school nowadays? I'd consider IR or MPP for being involved with something I'm genuinely interested in for a couple years but probably not necessarily leading to an awesome job or anything or IT or Compsci for something that's kind of practical to my current experience but dry for me. I know there's a lot of cynical discussion here but not all of you probably went for business as an undergrad.

I got like 3.5s on my essays (vs. maybe 750 verbal and 800 math). I really don't think anyone cares about the essay section, particularly if you have a good writing sample. I honestly wonder if they include it just so they can charge more for the test.

learning difficult math in grad school sucks

makes me wish I didn't entirely ignore math in undergrad

only now do I realize that math is fun and useful
