def. wanna see this, but i know i'll forget about it by the time the first episode of this airs on march 24th.
meanwhile, i guess discovery has a show called all star dealers? i had no idea till it was linked to in a story about that ball boys show. i guess it premiered jan. 24th; anybody seen it yet?
edit: just watched a clip of all star dealers. good god, if they spend half the show explaining who people like ronnie lott and dan marino are, i'll have to tape this shit and fast-forward through that stuff.
I need a good shelf for my Cards cards. That auto'd Ken Hill rookie card needs to shine.
Forgive me for not reading back through the last few pages, but if I decided to put together a base set for the first time since 1992, would Topps 2012 S1 be as good of a pick as any? Has it been out long? Are there release dates/descriptions for upcoming sets from various companies?
2012 came out last week. Personally I think the design is pretty ugly (same with the inserts).
If you just want the base set, just pick a factory set when it comes out in the summer (or get it on eBay when Series 2 comes out from sellers that break cases of this stuff). You can easily find the 2011 Factory Sets at Target.
edit: Also, the factory sets you pick up at retailers like Target or Wal-Mart come with exclusive manufactured patch cards and I think you can see from the outside which one you get so maybe you can get the set to come with, say, a Bob Gibson patch.
But if you want to put together a base set of something from breaking packs or boxes and want to do it in an affordable manner, there's the Opening Day set that comes when the season starts. It's a $1 per pack, and the design is the same as the Series 1 and 2 just without the foil printed on it (plus the "Opening Day" logo printed on the face). The base set is about 200 cards (I think it was 220 last year). It's not really a set built for lasting value but the inserts are fun. There's a few autograph inserts, but it's usually of really minor players.
2012 Came out last week, the base set is a bunch of cards (two series of 330 cards, plus the "update" set with rookie call ups, traded players, debut cards, other players that weren't in the set). These are the cheapest and easiest set to build as there are no "short prints" that keep you from making a complete set. The short prints that do exist are variations of cards that come in packs at normal ratios.
Heritage and Gypsy Queen are out soon, they are smaller sets but have short print base cards that take more work and money to acquire. Heritage is in the style of 1962 Topps, and Gypsy Queen is a throwback to old tobacco style. Gypsy will have more legacy players if you are into that (Mays, Aaron, Ruth...) These cards cost more too.
So I usually build the MLB set (2011, 2012 Series 1/2 etc.) , Bowman and Heritage. Bowman is prospects and rookies, I am sure you know so probably not what you are into.
Go to blowoutcards.com and look at the 2012 pre-order for boxes on the left and that gives you an idea on release dates.
That Ball Boys show looks awesome. Was hoping someone would make a Pawn Stars type show specifically for sports items. Obviously the Pawn Stars guys did it themselves. Without doubt gonna get cancelled after the first run though, it airs on ABC on Saturdays at 3pm??

Hmm. I guess I'm wanting to recapture that thrill of opening packs and piecing things together more than having a set for the sake of having a set. Looking at Amazon to get my lingo right -- are blaster packs easy to come by at Walmart/Target/hobby stores? I can justify dropping ~$20 on a whim; don't think I'm ready to throw down for any more cards than that sight-unseen.
I've been building my Topps Chrome set thru blasters at said stores. it's coming along nicely but I feel like I'll need to grab a hobby box at some point to fill in some of the blanks. doing it for the same reason, though, reversemigraine. makes the pulling of someone like, say, Jamie Harper 10x more exciting
I think Topps Chrome hobby boxes are pretty affordable right? I have picked up a couple blasters but never got any decent hits other than the numbered refractors, but no really decent ones there.
So I went to Walmart and came back with a hanger and a blaster of 2012 Topps. Forgot how fun this shit can be. Gonna have to buy some storage shit tomorrow.

Cmon man, you can spend $20 any way you want. Unless you're worried about the "nerd stigma" well fuck that then.

She's been very patient with my love of comics. She'll be politely amused at this.
At least collecting baseball/football is acceptable. I don't think I'll ever break the news to future girlfriends that I collect wrestling cards. At least it's not as bad as Benchwarmer cards..

Finshed watching Ep 1 of that All Star Dealers and it was only alright. They work on consignment auctions so whenever they had the guys talking about them "losing money" when something didn't pass authentication its just stupid, they didn't lose a penny. Plus the entire episode only covered two lots, one from Dennis Rodman and the other were just two jerseys undergoing authentication so it felt a bit stretched out. They do include the prices that the items actually sold for at the end of the episode though which is great, would hate to be left hanging on their actual value.
