reversemigraine wrote:Having not seen The Avengers yet, I can only speculate on how many direct references there are to previous movies, but as far as Thor is concerned, you should probably understand that Thor and Loki are adopted brothers, and that most of the movie involves Loki's scheme to get Thor banished to Earth, where he remains powerless for a good chunk of the movie until he proves that he's worthy of carrying his hammer again.
The movie ends with the destruction of Asgard's bridge to Earth, leaving Thor stuck in Asgard with his family and friends (but not Natalie Portman), and Loki on Earth, where (in the post-credits scene) he starts scheming up a way to get ahold of the Cosmic Cube, which is an old Asgardian weapon that the Red Skull used throughout the Captain America movie, but that is now in SHIELD's possession.
You also get a Hawkeye cameo in Thor. And there's a hint that Stellan Skarsgaard's character (a kindly old astrophysicist and Natalie Portman's mentor) knows Bruce Banner.
