It blows my mind that people are caught off-guard when others find this stuff offensive.
I reduced the temples of Elam to naught; their gods and goddesses I scattered to the winds. The tombs of their ancient and recent kings I devastated, I exposed to the sun, and I carried away their bones toward the land of Ashur.

So Raffi Torres has 99 problems and having half the hockey world calling him a racist is one.

In 1993 I went as 'Sexual Chocolate' and wore blackface. It was a huge hit but this was in Victoria, one of the whitest cities in Canada.
In 1994 I went as 'Sexual Chocolate' and was told to remove my blackface or get my ass kicked at the bar. This was in Halifax, one the cities with the largest black population in Canada.

I'm glad there wasn't twitter in 1993 or 1994.

the thread title seems like a reasonable statement but then i read the content of Sparty's post and it seems he meant to end that statement with a question mark or even the question mark-exclamation mark combo.

i have a problem with people actually dressing up as minstrels and putting on blackface makeup. i don't have a problem with people dressing like celebrities. it does not appear that raffi torres was dressing up as a minstrel. rather, he was dressing up as a rapper he likes.

if he wore a jay-z mask, no one would be offended.

It's the kind of thing where you might not think it should be offensive at a high level ... traditional blackface was offensive primarily because it was associated with offensive caricature (comically large lips, etc.). In theory, if you wanted to be a black person you'd have to darken your skin, just as it would be impossible to convey Smurf without making your skin blue.

Like, I can see how rational minds might be able to separate the historical stigma from the actual act.

But the nanosecond you see it in real life it just hits you. It's wrong.

just so I can get out of this thread asap:

-blackface isn't as bad as some ppl think it is. most people are just trying to look more authentic and not play up any black stereotypes

-you are a legitimate hardcore asshole if you paint your skin black for halloween. You know how some people feel about it and decide you don't care. get fucked, fuck you, there are a million things you can dress up as that don't stir up known issues with people. don't be a dick, be a vampire or something

it's offensive not because the guy meant anything by it (he didn't), but because others associate it with something.

the association itself is pretty weak, in my opinion. if there's makeup on a white face, it's blackface. that seems to me a pretty broad way to define something "offensive". it doesn't matter whether it looks like minstrel makeup or not. all that matters is there is dark makeup on a face. and it's a white person wearing it.
