I think it needs to be a combo of the three (sound, band makeup, fan makeup), not just one or the other or the other

Anyway, I always thought the "exploitative" tag for Vampire Weekend was a bit eh--to exploit something, I think it needs to be a lucrative commodity, and it's not like mbaqanga records or whatever are consistently racing up the charts here. I mean, you might as well call Justin Timberlake exploitative--he sings songs and rhythms that are not born of his culture and have been proven sellers. I mean, "appropriative" fits for Vampire Weekend, sure. They sound ridiculous when they actively try to sound like they came off of the Indestructible Beat of Soweto.
