Is Vimeo slow for anyone else right now? I can't get that Murray video to load.
What became of her? She lived, as she liked to say, off the kindness of gentlemen. I assume she’s dead.

I once worked with a guy who claimed to have met Bill Murray on a film set once. Apparently he went up to every crew member he could find and shook their hand and asked what their name was. Then when they responded he would just look them in the eye and say "that's a dumb name" and walk off. He did this until he met a guy who told him that his name was Bill and he bought that guy a coffee or something.

I thought this was really excellent, lived up to expectations, felt like a really good distillation of everything he's done up to this point in his career. I don't think on first viewing it's quite at Rushmore status, but it's up there. So many great moments, I wanna watch it again as soon as I can.

Amazing how well Bruce Willis fit into this. He seemed like he shoulda been in every Wes Anderson film.

And I met Bill Murray last year, it was the highlight of my year. My brother has a tattoo of him, so he showed it to Bill, who smiled really wide, nodded slowly, said "that's me!" and then fist-bumped the tattoo. Then he shook my brother's hand and said "keep on rocking"

Edit: realised I already posted this anecdote in this thread. Whatever, that was in January.

Agreed. I also felt the lightning strike bit was a headscratcher. Overall a p.great film tho, I'll definitely see it again.

Also, the ArcLight in Hollywood has the pink dress and the khaki scout uniform on display

This month's American Cinematographer has a really cool interview with Robert Yeoman about shooting this film/other Anderson films in general.

they had a surprise screening of it in San Diego. my friend was at a record store and they just had free passes laid out on the table. so she grabbed like 14 (there was no limit to how many you could take) and so a bunch of friends and I got to see it for free!

i loved it. Royal Tenenbaums will always be my favorite because of nostalgia, etc. but this one is definitely up there with his best work I think.

this was pretty awful

there was no reason for any big actor / actress to be in the movie. he could've used no-name actors and it wouldn't have been any different.

Since Tenenbaums, I've always enjoyed Wes Anderson movies more the second time, after the style-pummeling has been dealt with by me. This will be no exception. Also I had likability problems with the kid who played Sam. I wonder if the music/performance-within-the-movie structure isn't the strongest thing about this. Also the Bob Balaban structural stuff. Feels more like Fantastic Mr. Fox than any of his other movies.

Had a bit of this too. I like this review, though I wouldn't go as far as he does. I watched it with my mom, who really loved it. When she was little, she lived on a lake in nowhere Indiana; movie apparently felt just like the adventure she and her brothers would go on, right down to seeking out little coves and inlets.

Despite my not quite liking Sam, I think this was the cinematic relationship I have cared most about in a movie, next to Wonderful Life. I wonder if the "Dear Suzy, here's my plan." "Dear Sam, my answer's yes." sequence resonated as hard for people who haven't had a relationship develop primarily out of correspondence.

Saw this yesterday, I think it's like 40% the best thing he has ever done but then other 60% is like the worst and most derivative shit he has done.
Maybe like Mesh said it will go down better on a second watch because his style through a lot of it is so forced, but I guess that is what makes the looser bits so good.

Went to see this today. Picture cut out about ten minutes before the end. For a moment i thought it was a stylistic device because we could still hear the sound and they'd just gone out into the storm but the horrifying reality soon dawned. Up to then it was decent. Certainly a lot more tolerable than Life Aquatic and Darjeeling. I doubt he's ever going to get near his first three films again but i like that he toned down some of the more obvious Anderson signifiers. The soundtrack in particular was a blessed relief
