this thread inspired me to check out code academy for yucks. its really addictive but seems like it doesn't give you anything but the basics.

been working on this https://stripe.com/blog/capture-the-flag
I've barely touched C or memory manipulation before. Stuck on the buffer overflow level right now. Lots of fucking around learning gdb commands.
I pay tax to help pay for things like police..fire..parks..but it goes to Ferguson like people and foreigners who are scamming our stupid government that is full of pasta thieves like this guy

i dont even know how i programmed anything in C/C++ without scripting gdb. anything useful, anyway. valgrind can actually be kind of useful for finding some buffer-related info

turning a django backend into a REST API with tastypie. going well, it's a nice package.
going to consume it with backbone.js, then get to work on some of these thick-client features our clients have been clamoring for.

I saw Simon Peyton Jones talk last week, he was fantastic. Anyway, somebody asked him what he thought of Scala and he said he thought it was quite cool but also really worrying since it's basically just Martin Odersky has taken every feature he could think of and thrown them into one language that only he really knows the semantics for.

Scala is kind of the opposite of "something offbeat."

left my 3d programming job back in september and been working on mobile games with unity since. fun times!

mikey, any particular reason you're just targeting android? my friend and i have a pretty big hit android game (10k+ sold, 8 million+ downloads) that we can use to promote other endeavors on the platform, but we've still found ios to be 7x more profitable without any advertising.

there is no reason it can't be implemented on the iphone. i'm just an android user, and i don't own a mac to program on. if the android one picks up, i'll buy a mac mini.

what game is yours?

anyway, my impression of the two markets right now is that you'd be better off going in the other order (even accounting for the cost of a mac). it's really hard to get a foothold in the android market right now, but an established brand can shoot to the top of the search rankings and stay there. the app store puts you at the forefront of your search terms from day one.

gotcha.

re: art, i've found this series to be really helpful: http://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/ChrisHil ... 1015/8669/. i hadn't done any graphic design work before, but after some time with these tutorials and looking at existing work to figure out how it was done i've been able to make a lot of stuff i'm really happy with. not world class, but i don't think it looks like a programmer did it.

i just finished a big project at work. we built a decisioning engine and document generator for loan mods. it's not built in the newest or greatest language (vb.net with lots of sql functions and stored procs for the db backend) but it was really fun to do something from the ground up (create db schema, design app, create workflow inside of app based on business decisions etc).
