Hipinemulation: Castlevania III (Konami, NES)

Jesus christ you have to be kidding me.

We stayed up all night beating Bucky O'Hare the night before my buddy's wedding a couple years ago. Totally worth it.

i'll be honest, i've never played the game. the recommendation in this thread, and the description "Konami's Megaman" sold me, though. pretty psyched to see what it's all about.

bucky o'hare was pretty important to me growing up, jazzed to mess with it again

gimmick was fun, but tough as hell

even do-re-mi ramped up after a while, i think maybe i just suck at games now

Bucky O'Hare is a great game but the last boss is fucking impossible (to me) without save states and still really hard with them
Fuck being hard, Petty is complicated

i think it's the last level maybe. where you have ot get across this pit by jumping on platforms that(iirc) just randomly appeared/disappeared. that part was so nuts. took me fucking forever to beat, and i had like, gross blisters on my thumbs. this and street fighter alpha 3 are the only games i've gotten blisters from.

yeah this and gimmick! are reminding me of why i like videogames in the first place.

on a similar note to bucky o'hare i remember the tiny toon adventures konami game for the snes being much, much better than it had any right to be.

we should do an actual mega man game sometime just because i never played any games in that series aside from 2.

these may be the only games on the NES for which i'm qualified to attempt speed runs

I remember being very skeptical of that Tiny Toons game my cousin had because his mom bought all his games from Sears, and 3 hours later begging him to let me borrow it when I had to leave.

Yeah Tiny Toons is pretty good, a good rental back in the day

Adventures in the Magical Kingdom is also supposed to be really hard, but I dunno if it's actually fun.

Mega Man 1 would probably be a good choice for a Do-Re-Mi level of difficulty, mostly just for Wily's castle

1.first this fun little tidbit
Interesting fact about this game is that Konami used to implement unconventional ways of piracy protection, in this particular case by making each hit or an otherwise harmful collision in the game result in an instant death if you play it illegitimately. Apparently, this was how a large amount of people were used to playing it in pre-emulation era, without ever finding out Konami's little sabotage.

its possible to beat the game like that and you can try it yourself by entering the code HARD!, but I don't think I'm gonna try and fuck around with anything like that

2.Almost all the Konami and Capcom games made from licensed cartoons are classics and a big part of my childhood. Darkwing Duck, Ducktales, Chip N' Dale, the NES and SNES Tiny Toons, Aladdin , even the Bonkers game was great. Rented Crazy Castle all the time too and my mom actually seemed to like watching me play it. Its kinda crazy that good developers and musicians cranked out all amazing games with wonderful soundtracks, when I'm pretty sure it would have sufficed for them to just hastily throw together some junk and assume that kids will make their parents buy it because it has the characters they liked on the cover.

I can vouch for tiny toons being an awesome NES game. The Genesis version might've been the most blatant Sonic ripoff I've ever played btw, give it a shot.

Bucky O' Hare had a shitty konami beat-em-up available in the arcade as well

NES version was way better in my opinion.

Also, I'd like to nominate

If you enjoyed, Bucky O'Hare, you'll love Zen, as it seems to run on the same gaming engine.

as soon as i got to that part i had this intense flashback to my parent's unfinished basement, as a 7-year old, throwing my NES controller against the cinder block wall over and over again each time i had to play the Quick Man stage in Megaman 2.

bucky o'hare in general is one of those things i was HUGE into as a kid and i guess assumed everyone was? but like, none of my friends really remember it, beyond maybe a "oh that green rabbit? yeah i guess?" but like, i still have my bucky o'hare action figures and shit
