Hipinion Plays Mass Effect 3

Jesus christ you have to be kidding me.

Relieved to hear it. The shit experience that was DA2 is the main reason I'm holding off on buying ME3. Waiting on/hoping for a good consensus review from the board here.

I always get kind of sad for non-story/"gameplay mechanics" dudes -- that they have such trouble even seeing what the other side wants is on some The City & The City shit.

Awkward is a good word to say something about the critical situations which implies a strong feeling for anything.

dialogue isn't great, but i really love the mass effect universe and spend too much time reading the codex

i'm enjoying it so far

so the multiplayer seems to positively affect your single player game?

spoiler spoiler spoiler

I'm really really hoping the Cerberus robot thing goes somewhere interesting. The main quest is shaping up to be boring as shit (although I felt this way about the DA:O origin stories too and that ended up being a pretty good story overall, if not one that'd win any points for originality, so maybe it will turn out to be a pleasant surprise) but there's some potential for the Cerberus robot subplot to go in unexpected directions, so at this point in the game that is my big hope for rewarding plot developments.

If it turns out to be the boring ol' Faustian "lol you were consumed by what you thought you could control! YOU FOOL!!" thing then I am going to be sad. But not surprised.

played about 6-7 hours and the story is pretty thin build up with lame minor character sacrifices (save one non-minor character)
where the hell are the other squad members? I'm sick of the the 3 so far, I'm missing Garrus, Wrex and Jack from 2

I don't remember who survived the end of 2 for me, maybe that's the problem, I guess if I play thru again on insanity I'll have to use a fresh save

for what it's worth, me3 has approximately 0.02% gameplay and it's eating away at my soul in exponential increments the further i get. really liked the grand tuchanka mission, though. if there was some real level design there the ancient krogan ruins could've been one of the more memorable reveals in gaming. instead it's the same "here are a bunch of enemies, each one of three or four archetypes, streaming toward you in waves - do whatever you want with them" thing that hasn't meaningfully evolved since me1. resident evil 4 it's not

but hey, i felt for the krogan female and mordin. i really did

the problem is that bioware can't help but fill out their games with what they consider content while all but ignoring the brittle foundation its grafted onto. they've been working in 3d for what, 12 years now? yet they've taken no risks with player interactivity. there's no excitement in exploring mass effect's cities and landscapes aside from the abstract impression you get. you idly jog through it all, visiting one-click consoles and avoiding invisible walls when you can. getting from place to place means almost nothing because there's no connection - no tactile ground. why add a jump to your game when there's no risk? you end up with a glorified cutscene

bioware has to be among the most profitable devs in the industry. they need to build a game before they flesh it into a universe. mdk2 is their only 3d exception

yeah they kind of fail at making the basic act of navigating 3D space pleasant or interesting. even jogging across a room feels ungainly

the combat sections (i.e. the game) are really tiring now that I can barely press the keys as fast as the cooldowns happen. Liara can do Singularity every 3.17 seconds or something, and when you combine that with a fully-levelled vanguard charge it kind of takes the challenge out of regular enemies. except those shitheads who put down turrets everywhere.

I'm enjoying the cameos by ME2 party members (esp. Thane) more than I am the main quest, which is kind of worrying. related: I wonder if the writers anticipated the psychic harm I am about to inflict on Ashley, given that she was just starting to trust me again before Miranda showed up and I realized I could carry on with the latter instead of the depressing space racist.

also, the day-one, tack-on DLC is utter junk. worst mission I've played so far, and I refuse to put the Prothean in my party because he looks and sounds intolerable.

Both Jack and Wrex are in my game.
Wrex is the leader of the Krogans.
Jack was at the Grissom Academy.

Garrus is dead in mine. You probably have a dead Wrex and Jack.

I can't see much reason to bother.

So far at least there's nothing to recommend this game beyond that it caps off the story of the first two.

i play me3 to watch kodiak shuttles take off and land in strange places. it's the only thing that's keeping me going because i love that shuttle to death. it would have meant a lot to me if we got to fly it this time around

this kills me about rockstar games too

they put hundreds of thousands of hours into generating Assets and Content but getting to/through any of it is pure boredom/frustration

just now when i visited kaiden in hospital, i was halfway through an emotional speech when a medical professional walks in and just stands there

this is a lot like when i was reunited with liara and said how much i loved her whilst kaiden just had to turn around and pretend he's not listening as a commanding officer is trying to get laid again

good game
