i am the absolute worst at cable management, so I'll try and post a picture of my rat's nest to offset those tranquil setups upthread.

classic speakers

glad you approve. when I got 'em, one of the surrounds had disintegrated, so I replaced it, but I think I need to replace the other three surrounds soon. They don't do bass real well.

have you seen his photos on instagram? the spot is looking prime! i wish i had carpentering abilities, because i'm convinced that for a large collection it's gotta be either expedit or custom shelves, and i'm not a huge fan of the former.

emotional fascism, looks like i have a similar setup. project expression III, vintage marantz amp w/ focal speakers.

check the solder points on it, if any look shitty re-solder them. you could buy a replacement rca jack for like $1 if that doesn't work, they're easy enough to replace. if that doesn't fix it then bring it to someone to look it over or just use it as an excuse to buy a new one.

Before you do that, buy some deoxit, open up the pre-amp if you can and spray the pots and then work the switches back and forth. Might just be a dirty connection somewhere.

When I was in Chicago - i.e. when I was paying way less for rent and food - my record budget was about $50/week. Now I shop far less frequently, but tend to spend more when I do. I budget $100 for a record show (about every 2-3 months), and about $75 when I visit a shop (same frequency). I'll have pics up in a day or two.

I'm at about $40/trip, which nets anywhere from 3 to 6 records. I go about once a month.

yes, a ceramic floor is a terrible surface - when I moved in I immediately recognized the need for acoustic treatments

there isn't too many reflections with those in place

I like the simplicity of CDs

An analog set-up at this level is quite an undertaking and is something I would consider down the road

i started collecting vinyl when i was 15 or so, and would spend most if not all of my disposable income as a teenager on records. when i moved out (and to a different town), i couldn't really afford it and would maybe buy like, 5-10 records a year. i've been buying more lately, mostly because i have a bit of disposable income, but i have way better self-control in the stores than i used to. a lot of it's probably because i don't listen to a lot of new music, so most of what is prominently displayed is completely foreign to me. i guess i only really buy if there's something i really want, something rare, or something that's a really good deal, very little buying for the sake of buying.

but yeah, i say this now with somewhere between 400-500 LPs in my collection. can't imagine starting a collection again. kris has customer profiles at his store (where i did most of my shopping) and i'm sure i spent somewhere between $10k and $15k there, almost entirely from the ages of 15-19

Ive probably got 400-500 albums as well...I dont want to think about the accumulated cost, especially considering how many of those were bought new. Im sure at least several thousand over the years, likely more. The thing that slows down your purchasing though is the prospect of constantly moving. I've done it twice and its a complete bitch. Theres no good way to pack them and its just a huge PITA carrying countless boxes up and down a flight of stairs in July.

My room is so small I've just had it re-done out and had 4x box storage spaces put in and a desk/drawer set put in so I could get my turntable back in. Records shown are the past few months purchases, I can't physically put the rest in the house so they're all in storage boxes in the attic:

Using a Gemini backup until I can afford to get the repaired.

Question for people: How often do you replace cartridges/Needle/styli? I've had two Stanton 500 MK II for about 6 months now alternated usage, thinking it's about time to change them over.
