Finally listening to music in the car again

i'm kind of partial to wouldn't it be nice and sloop john b, but they might be superfluous given the list you've assembled.

Well that's only the pre-Today! stuff. Obviously I am going to make her listen to Pet Sounds.

I think a lot of those are going to end up getting skipped but I also think it's valuable to drive home how square they were before Brian started smoking pot.

"Surfin'": "This sounds like ice-cream-shop music. ... Okay I think I get the idea." [skipped after second chorus]

"Chug-A-Lug": "Is this song about...root beer?" (A: "It literally is about root beer.") "This is pretty endearingly stupid." (Later: "I even liked that retarded 'Chug-A-Lug' song.")

"County Fair": "This girl sounds retarded. ... Do you just like the part where she calls him a loser?" (A: "Yes.")

"Surfer Girl": "How is it that these songs are all so wholesome and the girl-group songs are so creepy?" (I suggested it was partly because the Beach Boys wrote their songs.)

"Be True to Your School": "What the fuck is he saying? ... Brian just doesn't give a shit what these lyrics are about, does he?" (But liked, I believe.)

"In My Room": liked

"Hawaii: [turned volume way down]

"I Get Around": "Okay I know this one. ... It does sound a lot better than anything else so far."

"All Summer Long": "I can't tell if I know this song or if they all just start the same way. ... Does he ever just make Mike Love stop writing the lyrics?" (A: "...we'll get to that.")

"Little Honda": "Did they get paid for this or did they just want to write a song about a Honda?" (A: "I'm pretty sure it's just the same idea as the Small Faces singing about getting high in the park.")

Today!: mostly liked
-- "Do You Wanna Dance?": "It does seem like there is so much more going on in this song [than in their previous work]."
-- "Don't Hurt My Little Sister": "Seriously, when does Mike Love stop writing the lyrics?"
-- "Help Me Rhonda": "Are they saying 'Wanda' or 'Rhonda'? ... I guess there isn't much difference."
-- "Please Let Me Wonder": "This is the first song in a while that I actually haven't liked."
-- "I'm So Young": suffice to say that girl-group covers make her angry
-- "She Knows Me Too Well": "This song sucks too."

still my favourite thread currently, though i am curious why you didn't cherrypick from endless summer

i mean it's pretty much flawless as is.

That would probably have been smarter, yes. I was still in my "greatest-hits collections are for my mom" phase when I got into the Beach Boys, so I didn't really know what was on Endless Summer.

I am glad I included "Surfin'" and some of their other goofy early stuff though. I realized about halfway through that I'd left off "Surfin' USA," but hopefully she knows that one already.

Pet Sounds: "I liked it apart from that one song. And the other song. ... My favorite tracks were 1, 2, and 'Sloop John B.'"
-- "Wouldn't It Be Nice": "It does sound like they all suddenly got a lot better at their instruments." (On being informed of the Wrecking Crew.)
-- "You Still Believe in Me": "Is this about his girlfriend dumping him because he went crazy?" (A: "Not...really.")
-- "Don't Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder)": "This is the first song I don't like. It's booorrring."
-- "Let's Go Away for Awhile": did not like
-- "Sloop John B": "I would try to clap along but I don't have enough rhythm and you would laugh at me."
-- "Caroline, No": "Oh, 'pet sounds.'"

Smiley Smile: did not care for
-- "Heroes and Villains": "This doesn't really sound any darker than their other stuff."
-- "Vegetables": "I thought Mike Love stopped writing the lyrics. Wasn't this other guy supposed to do a better job?" (A: "I think I would just call it a different job.") "This would be a perfectly good song if it weren't about vegetables."
-- "Fall Breaks and Back to Winter": "This sucks dude."
-- "She's Goin' Bald": "Okay I'm skipping this one." [skipped]
-- "Little Pad": "God damn it." [skipped]
-- "Good Vibrations": "Does this album get any better?" (A: "Better...you mean, better than this song? Um...no.")

At which point we just listened to Pet Sounds again.

I really like "Sloop John B" a lot.

I've been singing it to the dogs since last night. I don't think SVC can tell though because my singing is about as good as you would imagine.

I have this tight-lipped smile that I use on occasions like that.

I probably didn't talk enough about "God Only Knows"'s place in history so I guess just read this section: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_Only_Knows#Recognition_and_influence

skipping Summer Days isn't cool, also. "Let Him Run Wild" totally slays.

For some reason most of Summer Days was attached as bonus tracks to the version of Today! on Spotify, so she did hear "Let Him Run Wild" and so forth.
