same here. i'm sure there's lot of eastern europe political reads on it. i'm just satisfied it takes me on an exhausting emotional journey.

yeah Possession reveals something new every time I watch it too

Kier-la Janisse's book House of Psychotic Women has a good entry on Possession and is an excellent read aside from that too

I quite liked the Town That Dreaded Sundown reboot. was very glad they kept the weird bit with the trombone!

Okay, I guess since we're a third of the way through the month, I should do an inventory of my progress thus far:

1. Gerald's Game, 2017. 4/5
Image
Mike Flanagan does it again. We've already talked a bunch about this and while I didn't hate the epilogue as some here did, I do think it strikes an off tone. But whatever, more Carol Struyken (sic) is a good thing, Carla Guiginonowoi gives a wonderful performance, and even hardened, gore-jaded me had to wince/look away during the de-gloving scene. Cannot wait for Mikey's Hill House series. I hope Netflix keeps throwing money at him.

2. Sssssssss, 1973. 3/5
Image
The mad scientist in this bad boy is all over the map. He's a bumbling, down-on-his-luck schmoe! No, he's a kindly, misunderstood genius! No, he's a manipulative asshole! But still kind of nice! This was hilarious. Mmm, yes, giant snake men...good plan for a heating earth. Oh wait, you're just turning humans into regular old snakes? Crying Snake-Boy in the carnival get some genuine pathos outta me, though.

3. Next of Kin, 1982. 3.5/5
Image
I honestly did watch this and enjoy it but I'll be damned if I can remember a single thing that happened. I must have been really blotto while viewing this one. Is that even a screenshot from the film? Who knows, but it looks nice.

4. The Bird With the Crystal Plumage, 1970. 4.5/5
Image
I decided that I had put off watching a bunch of unseen Argentos for long enough. I'm upset that I waited so long for this one. Such an assured, fully formed debut. Everything's here and it's almost all note-perfect. Boy do I love how Argento films architecture and design.

5. The Cat o' Nine Tails, 1971. 3/5
Image
...and then this one let me down. Feels like a half-hearted retread. The protagonists aren't as engaging, the story is fairly limp, the set pieces aren't as thrilling, the music not as bombastic. Fine for the genre but nothing that transcends or elevates it here.

6. Four Flies on Grey Velvet, 1971. 3.5/5
Image
Hell yeah, back on track. That opening segment! Speculative science gobbledygook! That ending car crash! Kind of seems like Argento wraps this one up arbitrarily and that hurts it a bit but this one moves at a brisk pace and has great music.

thanks for that - adding the book to my Amazon birthday list.

yeah, I thought Town had a clever premise rather than being a straight redo. liked it more than expected.

Sorry I know this has been brought up before, but what are some good horror podcasts? Not where they discuss horror movies, but where they tell stories or tales and maybe have good sound effects (not necessary)?

edit: i have the reading comprehension of a toddler apparently but my recc stands for movie podcasts
Mick Garris' 'Post Mortem' could use some polish but the guests/conversations he has are definitely worth your time. Jeffrey Combs ep in particular was fun.

This is straight up one of the best and most intense movie going experiences I’ve had in a long time. The way everything is framed, the pacing, the performances, just the way the actors and the camera move together, this movie sucks you in from the opening credit scenes and only stops to enhance the overall feeling of dread. Really recommend not watching Isabelle Adjani subway scene before watching the movie cause it’s way more intense in context. This movie is basically perfect, absolute new favorite, easily in league with Rosemary’s Baby and other great horror alike

amazing movie. and it really is an experience.

for whatever reason (actually it's to make room on my hd) i have been watching a lot of non-horror but here's what i've watched since i last posted:

Satan's Baby Doll (1982)
watched the hardcore version of this, because the one thing that can make an agonizing possession/revenge tale at a castle in Italy even worse is 10 minutes of blowjobs. the only notable thing here is one of those blowjobs gave a wheelchair-bound guy the ability to get up and walk (albeit briefly)

Transhuman (2017)
a reporter gets wrapped up in a conspiracy even if the goal doesn't make a lot of sense to me. this looks nice and has a great underground location for the finale and i suppose you could do a lot worse and probably have but this is easily skippable.

Final Destination (2000)/Final Destination 2 (2003)
last time i watched these was a good decade ago and i had the impression part 2 was better. well i think the first entry is pretty darn enjoyable for teen horror but you have to turn your brain way way off for part 2. but i still liked that too.

Gerald's Game (2017)
haven't read the book but since so many King books disappoint me in the final stretch, i guess this might be a decent adaptation? started out as a good sort of black comedy and by the end it felt like i was watching a Lifetime adaptation of a true crime survivor's autobiography.

Pet Sematary (1989)/Pet Sematary II (1992)
the first one is okay. i liked king's book but i read it as a pretty young kid when it first came out and never again. the last part makes me think more of Chucky than i think is good for what's supposed to be an emotionally devastating turn of events. the second one is a tonal mess. anthony edwards is dull. clancy brown is the only real reason to watch this.

The Granny (1995)
nasty wealthy woman dies (OR DOES SHE) and the greedy relatives are chomping at the bit for inheritance. this is a comedy and it is not good.

Lake Bodom (2016)
a slasher with perhaps a couple too many twists. i still enjoyed it. thought the acting and cinematography and ideas were above average for a slasher. somewhere toward the middle of the movie there was a hint of a direction that would have made a better movie though. finland, btw

Fantom Kiler (1998)/Fantom Kiler 2 (1999)
if you ever thought "what this giallo needs is naked women with silicone breasts standing and screaming endlessly and no hint of plot or visual creativity" then boy do i have a series you're going to like

Don't Kill It (2016)
the premise is established in the first scene so this isn't a spoiler: a demon possesses a person and has them kill kill kill but whoever kills the possessed person immediately gets possessed. luckily demon hunter dolph lundgren is on the case. this is filled with splatter and has some good comedic sequences but i think it goes a little too far into the serious and the flaw is right there in the premise: what excuse do you come up with for some downtime in-between the killings? enjoyed it but wish it was better

Catcombs (2000)
todd sheets movies are usually bad imo (not because they're SOV though) and this one isn't really an exception. 90 minutes of stalk and slash and people calling each other names and arguing. sheets does seem to have made an effort setting up the haunted house i guess

You're So Cool, Brewster! The Story of Fright Night (2016) and Unearthed & Untold: The Path to Pet Sematary (2017)
i think Fright Night is better than Pet Sematary but i don't love it. Obviously enough people do to make documentaries fawning over both (the Fright Night one is 2 hours 20 minutes and that's with an hour chopped off of it which I guess covers part 2). of the two, i liked the Pet Sematary one more since it doesn't have clips and had a lot more interesting tidbits. and i thought Mary Lambert came off as a human being while Tom Holland seems full of himself.

Jeepers Creepers (2001) / Jeepers Creepers II (2003)
the first movie is great and i think a whole lot of it is the characters and performances by justin long and gina philips. the second movie doesn't have any interesting characters and the last stretch is like a syfy movie (which is funny i guess since part 3 is going to be on syfy this month) although the section inside the bus has some good moments. i feel very conflicted about victor salva since on one hand, he seemed to get a very light sentence but on the other hand he did serve some time and has admitted to it so it's less awkward in a way than polanski or allen or singer or who knows who else. so if you can set aside salva, the first is a great movie.

The Glass Coffin [aka El Ataúd de Cristal] (2016)
you should know this is essentially a torture porn movie, although a little more psychological and not gore-oriented. an actress on the way to an awards ceremony is trapped in her limo and then a mystery voice speaking and a HAL-like red camera eye torment her. generally i strongly dislike torture porn but i'll say this one i found compelling. there's also a good chance if you consider yourself a fan of torture porn and you watch it you will think me classifying it as torture porn is stupid.

The Children (2008)
pretty basic story about evil kids but i found it enjoyable.

Needlestick (2017)
lance henriksen is on the verge of finding a cure for death when a hospital administrator decides to expose his highly-questionable technique (it's murder, y'all) when a victim's family threatens a lawsuit. so naturally henriksen does something about it. i'm a diehard Millennium fan so i always hope henriksen will find a project that suits him like that did but this one is fairly dull.

The 13th Friday (2017)
seems like some of the actors have an accent so english may not be their primary language but there's a lot of weird pauses in the middle of sentences and some bad acting in general. there's also some lines that cracked me up. two examples: "Look, I just think we need to think!" and "Legend has it this place was discovered in 1902 by a woman who to this day has no heir or remains." the plot or even what's going on from scene to scene is either deliberately abstruse or just incompetent. we start at the most subdued kegger ever at a cursed house and before you know it seemingly disconnected scenes are happening, people are killed, it seems like a lot of time has passed, things turn out to be dreams (or not, it's hard to say) and it's like 40 minutes before dialogue starts to clarify things. there's also some kinda cool-looking makeup/creatures along with some really dumb things. at one point a character gets a creepy call from what sounds like a cow. and there are a handful of moments that deliver some genuine chills. so yeah i liked it for a variety of conflicting reasons. it reminds me of late 80s italian horror, which i love.

Hey does anybody have suggestions for < 2 minute things to play between segments? Like favourite Halloween commercials and the like? Crispin Glover dancing in Friday the 13th?

I just rewatched The Raft and I think I may skip that one, there's an unecessary sexual assault scene set to lovey dovey music that I know the Montreal crowd will not go for.

After being haunted by the loss of his wife, a man searches for any way to bring her back and hires the services of Dr. Death: a man with the ability to prolong life by transferring the soul of anyone he kills into a dead body.

This one's a total hoot, it grows campier and campier as it goes on, sometimes going over the line but generally remaining fun. Lots of wacky killing and hammy acting, the direction and visual effects are straight out of 70's TV but in the best way possible. It's not a well constructed movie at all, it just feels like a collection of scenes of Dr. Death murdering people or scenes of the most standard exposition possible getting us to Dr. Death murdering more people. With some effort (and maybe the removal of some gay/racial gags) it would be a real gem. Bonus: be on the lookout for an ancient Moe Howard in his final role as an elderly pervert who volunteers during Dr. Deaths transference demonstration. C+

Just like every year, I’m very far behind on my intended October Horror binge so here’s a lame post about what I’ve seen so far this month.

Watched Gerald’s Game and loved it. One of those films that totally sucks you in from start to finish and only once it’s over you appreciate the narrative simplicity. hand gore scene had me balled up on the couch like a child. Maybe I’m getting softToggle Spoiler

The Disappointments Room: sucked ass. Why do I vaguely recall hearing a bunch of positive things about this movie when it came out? Who did I hear that from? It wasn’t even entertainingly bad.

Finally got my girlfriend to watch the OG Friday the 13th with me tonight and she enjoyed it a ton which made me happy since typically getting her to watch anything besides an early 2000’s romcom is like pulling teeth. It’s been so long since I’ve seen it and goddamn does it hold up.
