it really didn't work for me on the level of a horror movie, but i guess i stopped looking for that after a while and just kind of rolled with it. it definitely gets unsettling when they start tripping out in the woods, etc "harmony korine with a touch of horror" sums it up pretty well.

antione i had the same problem with toad road and found most of the cast + scenarios intolerable but by the end I found it genuinely spooky and it stuck with me in a big way

Someone on FB was asking for everyone's Top 5 horror movies. Not an answerable question but after thinking about it for awhile I'd say (in no order)

The Vanishing
Bride of Frankenstein
Hausu
The Shining
?????? (idk, Sleepaway Camp... Possession?)

Raw is the kind of movie where 99% of shit wouldn't have happened if characters just talked to each other. It sucks.

did people hate starry eyes? i rewatched it last night for the first time in a while and dug it - it's nothing profound or scary but it's fun and gross.

The ending is awful.

It circumvents logic and common sense in order to create a "cool" image/moment to end on. It also uses a naturalistic style when everything about it isn't tethered to reality in any way.

When the lead finds out her sister also craves flesh and decides to show her the car crash technique it's so baffling. It's like they wanted to avoid exposition so they just showed a series of actions that are confusing without any explanation or instruction. And why would the parents even hide this sort of information from their kids? The whole basis of this story falls apart so easily, which reduces the film down to a series of excuses for "nasty" imagery. This is French prestige Eli Roth.Toggle Spoiler

I don't remember a huge amount about the specifics of starry eyes but I seem to have given it 6/10 when it was released so I guess I thought it was ok.

would agree that it's fun and gross.

I wouldn't revisit it, I don't think.

im gonna watch raw this week.

I saw hounds of love last weekend, that was a great flick, almost unbearable to watch at times. that was one movie where i was absolutely thankful for a happy/cathartic ending.

gotta push back against Hounds of Love, thought it was a dumb slog

I kept waiting for Kate Bush
until the movie gave me Ian Curtis
when all along it should have been Nick Cave.

Oct. 9 - FEEDING BILLY (1997)

Image

Billy killed his mother as he was born...now he sets his sights on the teens who come to his cabin for vacation!

Very hard to see most of the time but I couldn't really say that proper lightning would have salvaged this. F

Unnaturally close, jet-setting twins become enmeshed in the Swinging London scene, where their relationship is strained after they befriend a predatory hustler and his girlfriend.

Odd little twincest tale overflowing with plenty of London's biggest creeps. All of the party scenes are great, and the whole thing is really well shot but almost every character's motivations are baffling. And it plays things way too tame and real for a movie about 20 something teens who walk around with a teddy bear all the time. C+

So far:

Gerald's Game - B+ (Ending F-)
Lifeforce - D+
The Love Witch - C

What else should I watch?

Is there an HD version of Hotel out there in the darkness? Would love to rewatch.

I just rewatched Deadgirl for the first time in a few years. I feel like it's overlooked.
Also I'm putting Society in the DB for anyone who hasn't seen it. It's really good! Unfortunately I don't think it's a rip from the Arrow release. Sorry!

Hooptober:

7. I Madman
8. The Town That Dreaded Sundown (2014)
9. Possession

I Madman was like an extended version of a Tales from the Darkside episode. Used to have a huge teenage crush on Jenny Wright though, so I'll watch anything she was in.

Need to find some good essays on Possession. I've seen it a half dozen times and I get more out of it each time, but I feel like some parts are impenetrable for my limited brain.
