Where I lived in wisconsin there was a lot of development going on that cleared different parts of the woods around my house, so you could follow paths through the woods to find different clearings. Some places felt incredibly secret and distant from my friends and home, like the field by the interstate that had a couch full of bee hive in it.

Where in wisconsin?

My grandparents had a hill on their property. If you climbed it and went back through the woods, there was a 10 foot by 4 foot mound covered in white rocks that was supposedly the tomb of Chief Kewauskum. I'd hike back there and stare at it until I thought I'd pee my pants, then run away.

I read this book from the library when I was a kid about these two kids that walked through the woods and ended up in a fantasy world and always thought of it when I was walking through woods. It has great art too

I couldn't remember the name of it for so long but finally bought a copy off ebay.

When it snows in the woods you can pretty much forget about the fact that you ever lived in a society.

That book looks awesome, Tom Servo.

My Grandparents lived in Kewauskum and i was during those same years that i found the tomb.

I think it's because that strip of woods was always referred to as "The Six-Mile" in my town.

I think I posted most, if not all, of these in the nonfiction thread, but they're about living in the woods and are so good.

We lost one of our trees. That tree survived the city making us move it and a lightning strike in 16 years. We had something like 23 trees in our half acre lot. 20 different species.

Now it's only 22 with 19 species.

We're going to lose another three probably in a few years due to this thing.
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emerald_ash_borer
We only had one green ash planted, but the developer gave the other two to us because they gave them to every house in the development because they're a soft wood, I think, so they grow pretty fast, and they're attractive shade trees. Only thing is that borer is on the eastern edge of the state and this is going to end like Dutch elm probably.

These are the kind of things that keep me up at night.
