blond is amazing. it's really grown on me, to the point that i think i prefer it to channel orange. channel orange is a kind of sloppy album with tight songs, but this one kind of flows with its sloppiness / looseness in a way that i really enjoy. i don't mean sloppy in a bad way in either case -- just the kind of loose, flowy nature of them.

wish i hadn't missed whenever this was up for sale but whatever.

i've also been listening to that moon river cover he has on spotify all the time.

its up there w/ laughing stock for me as i think of it as a fragile but somehow sloppily graceful ecosystem of sounds. It’s like bouldering on a rocky jetty and coming across a little tide pool that’s perfectly sustained, biodiverse, and balanced

Ankh thinks it’s the best record of the decade and honestly I haven’t been able to contest it

it's definitely up there. glad to see that the board has a lot of love for this album. i was curious the other day so i checked the allmusic page for it, which is what i usually do to get a sense of "boring critical consensus", and it had a 3 1/2 star review, which i was sort of taken aback by.

agree w/ankh though i've just started listening recently so i'm still in the glow

if you read through this thread it had some lukewarm initial responses too which i think i understand - i tend to listen to new music half-attentively on the way to class or work and i can see how this might be weird in that setting. i was immediately immersed, though, and i think probably posterity can only be good for it.

i said i was gonna write more but it's hard to because this is a very visceral album for me, i recognize in it the outsize emotions of that infatuation->love->hurt arc in a way that i've only really found in this and twin fantasyToggle Spoiler

did anyone else have a moment when listening to 'white ferrari' where you're like 'why have i always known this song' and then he sings 'each day of the year' just like paul in here there and everywhere. and you're like 'oh. nice.'

It’s definitely top 10 of the decade so far. I think I prefer atrocity exhibition still for 2016 AOTY but it’s close

Blond is dense and rich and subtle and confident in a way few other records I can think of are

Talk talk is a good comparison point tbh, in part too bc something like "laughing stock" is, like blond, a really amazing realization of the narrative possibilities of the album format

I think to echo what viv said it's interesting to consider the lukewarm response Blond had initially. I honestly think people were expecting Frank to do something much more maxed out, when it actually hinges a lot around quiet, focused moments. It's such a beautiful piece of art, definitely fits well with Laughing Stock as an album that creates its own atmosphere and mood while resonating on a deeply emotional level. The first time I listened to it felt so personal and intimate, my friend cried when we heard Self Control. I think it was hard to translate that intimacy to the hottake reaction culture of internet music coverage and discussion, despite a lot of us having that experience.

Also cooly thanks for this:

definitely elucidates part of what makes this song so special for me. Someone once posted here about showing their mom that song and how happy she got when she heard the Beatles quote, so it always makes me think of my deceased mom and gets me emotional

yup. i get really somber when i listen to blond. some parts are straight gospel and it just overtakes me to the point where i can't/won't acknowledge anything else around me.

can i ask for someone to up all the 2017 singles he did into dropbox? i don't think i've heard half of them.
