It was pretty insane watching random PSU students and alumni talk on ESPN last night about how taking down the statute wouldn't help them heal. Like, no fucking shit, you don't have anything to heal from, you didn't get raped as a child.

You can't possibly be this ignorant...

No, I watched the segment because I was too lazy to change the channel after the baseball game, and numerous people interviewed by ESPN stated that they couldn't see how taking the statute would help them get over what Paterno had allowed to happen. Taking the the statute wasn't done to appease the students of PSU, it was done to help the victims, and random PSU students and alumni aren't the victims in this case.

if not for the NCAA, they'd get rid of some of the coaches and start again like nothing really happened, just like they were trying before the NCAA stepped in.

according to a wsj article i just found, yeah:

The U.S. Department of Education will ultimately decide whether Penn State violated the Clery Act. Each violation carries a civil penalty of as much as $27,500. The department can also suspend schools from participating in student financial aid programs, though that has never happened

i don't know if any sort of fine from the dept of education would really hurt the football program, though. as said before, they collected over $200 mill in donations just last year.

as they aired this, all i could think was: there is no way those girls understand half of what the sanctions mean for the football team

after realizing even moreso than I already knew how ridiculous college football fanatacism is throughout this calamity, i'm reading people that are all like "think of the kids when complaining about the sanctions and look at these penn state fans being so brainwashed" then the next minute also speculating about potential recruits they can siphon or transfers. i have to think somewhere this is going to happen again.

as someone pointed out early, just what does a program have to do to get the death penalty? i know that these sanctions are going to fuck the program for the future, so why not just give it the death penalty? i dont know why but im just angry that the NCAA doesnt see this as on par with the worst possible fuckups.
