I started listening consistently around three years ago after a few failed attempts. Now I barely listen to any other podcasts

I like the recurring thing where he plays the long, steady build-up of a song and then cuts it off by answering a call right before it really kicks in

donkeykong311, I created this small comp for a friend years ago who wanted to get into the Best Show.

I definitely recommend listening to random clips on youtube or something like the comp above. Tom and PFT talking about The Gathering of the Juggalos really sold the show to me when I wasn't very familiar with it.

The Billy Crystal jazzman riff that culminates in 'terlet' is probably the most Internet famous thing he's done and is also a pretty great introduction

I really liked Mt Douchemore, but I don't listen to nearly enough episodes. I should listen to more episodes.

no one ever seems to recommend just listening to the very first shows in the wfmu archive sequentially but that was how i got hooked on the show long ago. i love all eras of the best show but hearing things gradually evolve early on is really fun and rewarding imo!

I can't remember if this was something I came up with or something a caller said, but I think if you listen to any three full episodes you'll be hooked. it's a tough sell to tell someone, "Oh just listen to nine hours of this thing and by hour eight it'll really click." but it's true!

Yeah I tried to get into it right at the end of the WFMU era and only listened to like 30 minutes and was like "is this all it is?" Tried again when he came back and was hooked.

my first show was in the sound clip intro era, so you had a collection of clips, then the theme song, then the bed song, then Tom going, "aaaaaahlright" and telling us the songs he just played (but we didn't hear those songs because it was the podcast) and I'm 10 minutes in and nothing had happened yet and I was so confused. I bailed.

this thread was so enthusiastic, I kept trying things. I'm not sure what finally got to me, maybe Philly Boy Roy (what with me being a Philadelphian)

I don't know if the order matters, he's always introducing new things, and context helps, but not always.

am I doing my math right, that if you were listening to the show from the very begining and never taking a break 24 hours a day it would take around 100 days?

I do a little performative gasp every time Jason from Alabama says "Hello Tom."

I highly recommend it.

I remember the first time I listened and Tom hung up on someone who sounded very nice, I was like, “well, I don’t know that I agree with this!”
