2012 London Summer Olympics Thread

Jesus christ you have to be kidding me.

Postby fury » Wed Jul 25, 2012 6:20 am

this "starts" tomorrow morning with some women's soccer including the us vs france. I'm fucking pumped for this crap even though half of it will be made useless by NBC's annoying tape delayed coverage of everything. I'll still watch way too much of this and watch like hours of badminton and archery.

Hey, I live about a mile from the stadium too. We heard fireworks the other night and figured they were practicing for the opening ceremony.

I'l probably be looking forward to this more when it's the meat of the events rather than all the initial bluster I guess.

I wouldn't mind going to the opening cermony either. They seem to be going all out for it. Can't wait to get the TV coverage sorted here, BBC are operating 24 extra channels to cope with all the events.

I'm afraid this thread title is in violation of Olympic copyright, you must change it immediately or the LOC will immediately gain ownership of your first born child.

Kinda crazy that NBC has almost 4 times as many staff on the ground in London than the BBC, yet they'll insist on tape delaying everything and probably butchering half the coverage.

Why are they tape delaying? I mean events aren't that far ahead of the US, something on at 1pm here would be 8am in the US. Not many of the major events will be on before midday.

Yeah, and the swimming and athletics finals are all late enough in the evening that they'd be on around 3/4pm in the US (EST)

Ah they're used to watching sports at weird times. There'll be loads of streams and the like anyway for people who want to watch events live. EVen the Irish broadcaster RTE has like 15 web streaming channels of Olympics coverage.

This is so laughable:

"The audience will know when these events are on tape," Costas said. "But they will be presented in such a way, that if you didn’t want to know, you can enjoy it that way."

And he’s still clearly ticked off about allegations that NBC misrepresented taped events as live — which he put down the occasional slip of the lip. Anything that makes it sound that way will be inadvertent because "in thousands of utterances, once or twice, accidentally, has the wrong tense been used."

"We try to be very, very vigilant about that. We do not say, ‘Michael Phelps now goes to the line in pursuit of gold medal number 15.’ We say, ‘He went to the pool in pursuit of gold medal number 15.’ There is no attempt to deceive."

Instead, there’s an "enlightened" attempt "to maintain a certain atmosphere in which if the person watching chooses to experience as if he or she knows nothing about it, they can."

Serious question:
What day is that sport where they do stuff with ribbons?
And what is that sport called?
