I think I probably like Alone the best out of the 3, but for some reason, none of them are intensely grabbing me compared to the last couple of albums.

Stating the obvious here, but this Ed Sheeran shit again is embarrassing. Either collaborate with cool people and make quality tunes, or make generic pop music. It's frustrating how she straddles the line. Seeing her live a couple years ago was a bit of a turnoff. She had some readymade, soulless LA band playing trancey synths.

That said, "Midnigbt" sounds cool to me. It definitely bumps. Looks like it was produced by Dexter Wansel's son (who I had never heard of). "Alone" seems to work well enough.

But "Selfish Love" is dull. It's got Pino Palladino and...Ryan Tedder. Pick a side!

Diggin' the album cover.

yeah, she of all of people does not really need to release 'buzz singles' - I feel like I'd enjoy Alone a lot more in the context of an album. Don't know what context I'd ever fully enjoy Selfish Love

"last of the true believers" (especially the acoustic version) seriously feels like she wrote a song for Mid Air

I...don't think I like this too much overall. Certainly her most forgettable album. She seems unsure of her direction these days, kinda caught between trying to make an overt pop album and the subtler sound of her best work. It's all pretty one-paced and the one song that ups the tempo ("Your Domino) comes across as a less successful take on "110%". Obviously "Sam" is very meaningful for her personally but I don't think she suits those kind of blunt confessional lyrics, especially when delivered over a boilerplate Sheeran ballad (the ambient jazz coda is quite nice though). Definitely a few really nice tunes though, as you'd expect (the aforementioned "FWWS", "Last of the True Believers", "Love to Love" from the bonus tracks)

idk maybe it'll grow on me

this is good. if pressed, i'd say "hearts" is the clear low point, but all of it's good to great, i'd say.
of the unreleased stuff, i rly like "first time," "slow me down," "finish what we started," and "last of the true believers."
"sam" is improved majorly by the coda, i agree.

i'm happy that it doesn't have any clear album cut stinkers like TL ("pieces," "desire")

overall, a sophisticated, mature pop/soul record generally about love, which is fine by me. dare i say it could even be ... a grower.

don't want this album to get buried — as the weather is getting worse, this album is keeping my warm

also introduced my new roommate to her and seeing someone connect with her so fully is such a thrill

edit: could live without the selfish love - slow me down stretch but everything else is perfect.

i loved her banter last year, too! have you ever listened to the podcast tho? for some reason I am scared it'll change things and I'd rather just think of her as a singer, so I never have despite being subscribed.
