unconventional, obscure jrpgs:
metal max + romancing saga are always touted as being open-world and off-beat for the genre
treasure hunter g
mystic ark
cosigning rudra

but these games are all easier to acquire on rom than cartridge

Yeah, I forgot totally about Romancing SaGa, I guess the 2nd one is the "best"? and I have Treasure Hunter G on it already.

What are the good Disney Mickey Mouse games, I know there are a few but I can't remember which? "Mickey To Donald" stands out in my mind?

Also I was looking at a Compatability list (Illusion of Gaia doesn't work without a patch!!) and found Do-Re-Mi Fantasy which is a beautiful game with amazing music if you've never played it. (I'm gonna add it)

Looking at this compatibility list (here) it seems a lot of games don't work because the SNES emulator on the mini was tuned especially to work with the games instead of how the NES mini was built as an NES emulator in general. Kind of making me feel better about my collection of carts and Retron 5 after I was feeling a little sad over maybe not using the Retron 5 much anymore.

After kind of dying down after getting the NES and SNES minis these last two weeks I bought Journey To Silius and Battle of Olympus on NES, Spelunker and Goonies 1 on Famicom and McDonald Treasure Land Adventure on Genesis.

It's pretty big like maybe 2 1/2 feet by 1 1/2? ANd yeah I got it in my complete box. It's really beautiful I should get it framed. Some day when I move out of London and can get something bigger I'm gonna do it.

Nah, I use a Retron 5, which I know is just dumping the roms and then you're just playing an emulator on the TV but being able to use an original controller somehow really makes it work. Plus I couldn't get away with having a Genesis, SNES, and NES hooked up to my tv in the livingroom.... we already have a PS3, PS4, DVD player and the Switch hooked up... haha

Hey bobble, do you have any recommendations for Famicom only carts that are playable without knowing Japanese?

I can recommend Onyanko Town that I have above:

whoa onyanko town looks great and ive never heard of it! might order this week.

some of these have some text but nothing that matters imo.

many of my faves are shooters - parodius da, crisis force, twin bee 3. salamander came out in USA as life force but the fami cart is clear and cooool. gradius 2 is famicom exclusive and pretty stellar. i have a recca repro that ive played a bunch.

i LOVE cocoron. its platforming/shooting except you put together your character. control is fairly tight.

nuts and milk is one of my fave famicom games, it feels like a different generation than some of the later releases but not in a bad way - like in a donkey kong way.

i've got a bunch more favorites, i'll try to pick some more later.

i usually either play on a twin famicom (love fds!) on a crt or with a retrousb avs on my big tv. i passed down my retron5 but wish i still had it to play with translation patches!

Probably gonna buy Nuts and Milk, mayyyybe Cocoron if I can get a cheaper one sometime. I played through it years ago on a "Best Japanese games that didn't come out in the US" rec.

For PopNTwinbee, is the first one good? The price difference is pretty steep(ish).

Also just wanted to post that I'm feeling pretty proud of my All Killer No Filler NES collection:

Image

Spot the THOUSAND DOLLAR Flintstones Surprise at Dino Peak that I've had ever since the NES was new. That was a pretty big shock when I saw it on the "The most expensive NES games" lists
