did we have a british tv show thread recently?

Let's talk Aguachile Alley

Collateral is pretty decent. Maybe a bit too 'old dude writing about what he thinks modern Britain is' I guess. His Page Eight/Turks & Caicos/Salting The Battlefield was great though.

Carey Mulligan's speaking voice is just great.

i watched the first series of detectorists recently

my god I found it so dull. I get that it has a sort of relaxed, undemanding, parochial, chill vibe but...no

I did watch the whole series tho, but then when the first ep of the second series was the dullest one yet, I checked out

Thought Collateral had some elements that could elevate it above the usual fare. In the end a few too many dumb/obvious characters and the Labour dude's relationship with his ex-wife was.. not a satisfying plot. So more or less typical British crime show stuff, but that's what I grew up with and still kinda catnip for me.

Good role for Mulligan though, I would totally give her the detective inspector job after watching this, knowing she's an actress, and feel comfortable about it.

Anyone watched the James Acaster specials on Netflix?

Best stand-up I've seen in a while.

I thought the Tom Segura special was funny. Hadn’t seen his stuff before.

Forgot this was the British tv thread...

I watched some of the James Acaster, and I thought he was more likeable than laugh-out-loud funny.

I got a lot of big laughs out of it.

Really well written shows and clever without the pretentious smugness of someone like Stewart Lee

Josie Long was great when she first came up like 10 years ago but never really evolved beyond that point.

What other decent British comics are there at the moment?

I feel most panel shows etc are unbearable so don't have much exposure, the only thing I watch is Taskmaster.

Lots of fantastic UK standups at the moment.

Daniel Kitson
James Acaster
Tim Key
Lou Sanders
John-Luke Roberts
Joseph Morpurgo
Katherine Ryan
Fern Brady
Sara Pascoe
John Kearns
Lolly Adefope
Demetriou Siblings
Bisha K. Ali
Spencer Jones
John Robins
Mae Martin

(Some excellent shows I've seen in the last year)

Also Aunty Donna, who are neither UK nor strictly stand-up, but was one of the best nights out I've had in a long time.

The Acaster specials are great. I never laugh as much when it's on a screen, but you can see the craft coming through. Pat Springleaf is such a good idea

I don't normally enjoy live stand-up very much but I caught Andrew O'Neill's Black Magick Fun Hour at the fringe last summer and it was brilliant

Went in without knowing anything about him and so glad I did, I think he's touring the UK with it at the moment

Does anyone listen to Athletico Mince? Bob Mortimer doing some of the best work of his career. The Peter Beardsley stuff basically makes me cry with laughter every episode. Also (and everyone offers this disclaimer) you don't need to know anything about football. I don't know anything about football.

Just started on this. Very fucking funny. Bob is a lot funnier than the other bloke but still pretty consistent throughout.

Bob's songs are amazing. Ballard of Barry Homeowner has a major Pulp vibe
