Another aspect that I was going for is that we always kill (literally and/or metaphorically) the external manifestations of our collective conscience. Imagine all of humankind as two children squabbling over something petty, Jiminy Cricket popping up and saying "hey, let's work together guys!"- and they do, in squashing Jiminy. After realizing the horror of what they've done, they /do/ start listening to what he said- and they are so afraid of being found out when Mom and Dad come home, they turn his corpse into an idol and start worshiping it.
I was also trying to add the scientific angle to the idea, hence why it wasn't a cartoon version of Jiminy Cricket- the intention being that dissecting the messenger is also just another way not to listen to the message.
