chairkicker wrote:i was thinking about medal of honor recently and had a really sad realization about cod wwii

medal and honor and medal of honor underground are games hugely indebted to goldeneye. spielberg played goldeneye and said "let's do that in wwii." despite kicking off the flood of wwii titles that followed, they largely don't play like any of them, including subsequent medal of honor games. and that's kinda why they hold up where all of their followers don't

now imagine call of duty wwii followed in those footsteps. imagine a big budget evolution of goldeneye in 2017, even if one couched in tired wwii backpatting. now blow your brains out

I don’t understand any of this but cod wwii is the worst big studio shooter I’ve ever played.

yeah, i guess i wrote this like an idiot but i just meant despite the "OMG WE'RE GOING BACK TO WWII" branding of the last cod, it's hugely tragic that no one thought to go back and play the games that started that trend. because if anyone had maybe we'd have finally seen some more evolution in call of duty. and with a little wishful thinking maybe that evolution would mean taking cues from goldeneye, just like medal of honor did originally. and that's a pretty exciting prospect because 1) the goldeneye model is still full of possibilty and 2) the considerable budget and resources afforded to a call of duty game

structured but still sandbox levels with nonlinear objectives, lots of interactivity, compelling AI behavior (which is different from raw intelligence), optional stealth that's isn't a checkbox feature

i'm not gonna say it's recommended unless u really like the banner saga

like, it's one step above fan fiction writing. i'll try and screenshot an example next time i boot it up. probably 90% of the budget went into the cinematics, which are gorgeous.

The mission impossible n64 game took some great cues from goldeneye along those lines. I’d love to see that game remade

you know im not sure ive really seen good level design since halo 3 in a shooter. everything is too hamstrung by the fucked up movement systems inscribed by the tradition of the games you mention; cod, destiny, battlefield.

chairkicker, are you talking about the ps1 MoH (which I never played, and thought was kinda obscure at the time?) or Allied Assault? The latter felt incredible, as someone who had been brought up on PC FPSs from way too young an age. I still remember my Dad bringing my Grandad over to show him the D-Day landing level, and the Trondheim sneaking parts.

and perfect dark hd is appropriately incredible

mynameisrocks, i'm talking about the original ps1 medal of honor and its sequel medal of honor underground. two games very much inspired by goldeneye

Im struggling to find the similarities. Wasn’t MOH the first shooter with ADS ? I remember it being pretty on rails as wel (but still a blast)

it is more on rails than goldeneye but mechanically, as a shooter, it's goldeneye. down to the way enemies react. and the way enemies react and behave is a crucial part of the fun and why the game doesn't become a corridor shooter even at its most linear

and there are a couple sandboxy levels. the train station is one of them.

Is it the exact same/reskinned combat system?

Did you play the great whale road, or that newer, much-more-actually-about-whaling start rpg

heard first was bad and nope

it's pretty much lifted straight out of banner saga. the only difference i noticed was there's energy vs shield

Brothers in Arms was cool. Best suppression mechanic I've encountered in a game I think
