I saw them in Newark DE in 1998 when they were still students at Penn because I knew one of the guys from high school. My mind was recently blown when I was able to find a recording of the show and it was really high quality sound. I guess they knew where they were going and where they wanted to be and were concerned about things like having high quality recordings of their show readily available.

26:00-40:00 of that video i posted is the Disco Biscuits boiled down to its essence if anyone is unfamiliar and cares. Features the ramp up to an Above the Waves peak which is one of the better things they do.

why is the opinion that the 11/29/97 Runaway Jim isn’t all that great a common opinion that people feel like they’re being subversive in saying?

confused for a few reasons... I think I read a “meh” about it in the Dead thread recently, but I’m too lazy to confirm... anyway, I feel like I’m alone in fluffing it, but it’s brilliant... very 95 at times for a fall 97 jam, and it’s Phish freeform jamming for an hour in their best tour without hitting significant peaks throughout, more just working out this amazing egoless flow through all these varied grooves and passages... it’s fucking great, sooo under appreciated

I might've been the meh in the Dead thread. It's been years since I listened to it, but that Jim never held my interest. Also controversially, I'm not always into the fall 94/summer 95 rapid herky jerky shifting jamming either. I mean I love the two big Fall 94 Bowies but like the Live One Tweezer doesn't do it for me. Gimme ten minutes of groove and then a five minute space jazz coda like the Hampton Halley's. Or the Hampton 13 Tweezer which adds in a brief metal section but flows smoothly from start to finish.

this goes through abstract phases but with the groove and fluidity of fall 97

and yea I’m picky about my 94-95 experimental jams... they’re not all made equally.. definitely check out 12/28/95 Tweezer, it’s one of the high points of that style for sure..... see also: 11/14/95 Stash, 11/23/94 Tweezer, 11/22/94 Funky Bitch, 11/12/94 DWD -> Have Mercy -> DWD

mostly a bass player / multi instrumentalist here, not a prodigious songwriter personally

have been fairly inactive the past few years tho, did a good bit of touring from 2010-2015 with a few bands

I've played drums for like 20 years and trying to play along with Fish has pushed me in to territories I probably never would have found otherwise. Currently trying to master the 'verse' groove of Stash. Then the whole song. I've always been amazed by his crazy fast ghost notes in songs like David Bowie or YEM.

I also listened to 12/29/97 and 12/29/94 earlier this week solely because 12/29 is my birthday

I'm feeling a little bit of Phish malaise, but I'm sure it'll vanish once I get on the road next weekend. Increasingly feel like taking 2019 off from the band (unless there's a festival/SPAC run/eastern Canada date of course).

Just got tickets for Nov.1. Worried they won't be delivered to me by the time I get on a plane for Vegas.

If anyone's selling for 11/2 or 11/3 , lmk.

I don’t think I’m going to get even semi interested until the day after the opener. It’s really bizarre how these cycles of obsession run
