i've only seen these, in preference order

ponyo
totoro
spirited away
mononoke
nausicaa
howl's

generally i prefer the more kiddie stuff to the actiony stuff. i havent seen a lot of japanese movies/anime so i dont know if it's miyazaki specifically or if it's just a culture thing, but the pacing seems to be so different/slow-feeling compared to western stuff, and for me that works better with something kinda chill like totoro more than nausicaa.

saw spirited away first and that one just blew me away so much, none of them ever came close to the impact, so:

spirited away
totoro
howl's
ponyo
the other ones get blurred. i probably like the cute ones. and that's ok.

man i saw grave of the fireflies and thought it was not very good
then i saw totoro and thought it was ok
i'm gonna wait another year or so and then give miyazaki one more shot but that's it

Introducing the miyazaki ones to my kids and having them become rewatch favourites was pretty gratifying.

back in the day i'd have agreed with you but honestly, that movie gets better every time i see it.

The last two were decent. Arrietty was gorgeous and Poppy Hill was really pleasant and a much stronger effort from Goro than the terrible Earthsea. Looking forward to catching The Wind Rises when it leaks.

Everyone (USA at least) go watch The Wind Rises this weekend. If it makes a zillion dollars maybe he'll make another movie.

I would have given anything to see these films as a child.

Fuck Disney. I'd trade in all their classic films + Pixar just to have seen a couple Studio Ghibli films as a child.

I want my money/childhood back.

I mean stuff like Kiki's and Totoro were cool to watch as a kid, but I didn't really appreciate them until I got older.

There's no Elton John songs so the appeal was somewhat limited back then.

I recommend the subtitles version. I thought the dub (translation) was pretty shitty and not as funny.

Haven't watched The Wind Rises dub yet. Can't imagine it really damages it that much.

totoro is one of the most unbelievably beautiful and human films i've ever seen. miyazaki's ability to tell such a genuinely moving story on what is a pretty small scale compared to the rest of his films is just staggering. i can't watch it without tearing up a little bit.

I haven't seen much Takahata, just Pom Poko and Fireflies, and I really hated fireflies, so that effects the rankings but whatever. I really wanna watch Whisper of the Heart

5. Mononoke
4. Naussica
3. Totoro

1. Porco Rosso

I thought he was not very good. I also thought his voice sounded too much like Krasinski's voice.

A lot of the subtle humor was communicated better with subtitles. I'm basing this off a calibrated Laugh-o-meter™ that I brought into both screenings.

Whisper of the Heart nearly made it into my Top 5. It's the most underrated one after Only Yesterday, that didn't even get a dub. Porco Rosso is usually overlooked but when people actually give it a shot they end up loving it.

I remember watching Grave of the Fireflies and not feeling right for about a week after it.
Very few films have had that kind of emotional impact on me. That's my number one.
