Honestly I usually don't mind Disney throwing a gang of talented people at these releases, but in this case it was just crass. It's a movie about Japanese people and Japanese history for chrissake.

Waste of Herzog.

after talking to some family and friends who loved the wind rises, i'd definitely be willing to give the movie another shot, but maybe in a couple years and probably subtitled.

my sister talked about how much the character paralleled miyazaki's own life, how his passions destroyed his relationships, and it made me think i was too hard on the movie.

i think i just walked into the movie with a bias knowing that the main character was responsible for creating something that resulted in the deaths of many. when i didn't get the kind of guilt/remorse/sorrow/whatever that i felt like the movie needed to make him sympathetic, i got kind of insulted.

looking back, and just typing this out, i feel like i didn't give it a fair shot and i need to watch it again with all this in mind. i definitely have an american mindset when it comes to art/film/literature, at least initially.

I can't deal with this. Lasseter is gonna buy it right? Just to keep the brand going?

yeah Miyazaki and Takahata basically were Ghibli, and maybe they don't trust the younger directors/animators to uphold their legacy, or rather they don't want to burden them with it. if they do shut down the animation department I'm sure they'll do good work at other studios. gotta feel bad for Goro though

I just went back and looked over some of the reviews for what'll be the final Ghibli film "When Marnie Was There". pretty rough, seeing as how most of em were praising it, hopeful for the beginning of the "new age at Studio Ghibli" and saying shit like "When Marnie Was There is a solid film that shows great promise for the future of the studio: it feels like the work of Studio Ghibli, but, crucially, not like a slavish copy of a Miyazaki film."

so, yeah. fuck.

the studio has been struggling for a while - even howl's which was a hit - performed below expectations after the big ramp up post spirited away. ponyo did well no doubt, better than howl's even if i recall correctly, but everything since has been dire (earthsea?)

couple this with how slow ghibli has been to embrace digital for home entertainment and a generally conservative attitude towards ancillary channels, licensing products etc and it's no surprise they are having to consider drastic changes.

which is a real shame. they're a truly unique and special studio. big loss if they stop making original films.

i'd really like to see The Wind Rises in japanese because that dub did not work for me at all. in terms of structure and subject matter it differs quite a bit from other miyazaki pictures (felt more like takahata), and it felt like the english language scripting and acting didn't really know what to do with these very specific scenes of aircraft engineering and technical jargon placed next to a tragic love story.

anyone have opinions on the us/disney blu-rays? from what i can tell, most are okay except Mononoke having weird subtitles? is this like, dealbreaker-level bad or is it just like, slightly different or what?
