i'd love to pick up Octopath and Captain Toad, but i still have so much left to do in Mario Tennis/Hollow Knight. I did beat Golf Story, which is more than i can say for most of the games i've bought over the past few years.

I am excited about octopath, but people's expectations should not be set by the dregs of jrpgs

Apparently a certain portion of the internet is melting down over the idea that the eight paths in Octopath don't converge. As I said before, I don't really understand why that's something anyone cares about. Like what is inherently amazing about a game that was promised as 8 separate stories that you can tackle in a different order coming together? It's a strange expectation. The only games that I know of that have a similar premise are some of the SaGa games, which are complete garbage and the characters have like one line to each other in the entire game (as I remember it). It's just... usually gamer expectations come from a place that makes sense to me, even if I don't agree, but I don't get this one.

All the demos for Octopath bored me to tears mainly because I hated the voice acting and sheer amount of inane dialogue. Combat was kinda cool but I felt like I was playing a phone game or something.

- deep, incredibly rewarding game mechanics and battle system
- beautiful world design that encourages exploration
- seemingly endless side quests and story material
- probably not a game you’ll want to play in front of others

Keep in mind I’m probably the biggest xenoblade stan here but dang it I love it

it would be one thing if Nintendo ever marketed octopath as a huge rpg with an overarching plot. they never did; they've always been quite clear that there are 8 characters with 8 quests. the fact that you can still do all 8 quests on one playthrough should be good enough.

It's really easy. If you look at any Youtube videos make sure to use "hakchi2 CE" as that's the most recent updated version.

i think i don't care at all about the stories not linking up and the way people describe the combat makes it sound like something i'd be into it, so hell i guess i'm in

the combat sounds fun and i don't really care about the stories not converging, but the kotaku review definitely has me concerned that the individual quests are bland and same-y. probably gonna keep plugging away at hollow knight and see what people here think first.

schreier's description of the mechanics was like one of those forum games about describing something in the most sterile and dispassionate way possible

yes, most dungeons in basically any game have a single critical path and then branching dead ends with additional treasures

I don't know why I like Schrierer so much when I disagree with him so often on his reviews

I'm not sure I'm a fan of playing the same game over and over with different classes.
I kinda went through that with Odin Sphere and gave up on the game after I played through it Like 5 times
