I've probably listened to On To Grasstown for at least 8 hours total

Cave Story is my favorite modern metroidvania and I'm a pretty big fan of the genre. Can't say enough good things about it honestly.

bluemovers wrote:yeah Octopath looks and sounds incredible, and will probably be one of my fav releases on nostalgia for the genre alone. haven't finished Olberic's demo playthrough yet, but i agree that so far it's a bit grindy and the battles are a bit stale. there's some promise in the 'press R to boost attack' stuff, though, so hopefully it gets even more complex/fleshed out in the final game.

I love the aesth of this but I dunno how yall can tolerate random encounters and spending 90 seconds paging through dialogue every time you die in a boss battle in fucking 2017

random encounters don't bother me if the battle system is fun. i know what you mean about the dialogue/boss battle thing though

I replied to the Nintendo demo survey about the boss thing. I recommend you all do if you get it. Hopefully they'll take it to heart for the final version

it's good, don't get me wrong. i don't like the increased focus on fighting, mostly. like the melee counter addition is cool, but it seems like (at least initially) most of even the lowest-level enemies require a lot of attention. as opposed to most 2D metroid games where a lot of enemies are scrubs that don't require much to dispatch. i feel like i have to fire 10-15 shots from my ice beam into these guys just to kill them, or else use missiles a lot more than i'm used to.

That sounds like just what Jeremy Parish was talking about here:

ok, yeah. i think parish is expressing exactly what i was trying to get at, now that i've read the article. like when there are more than 2 enemies on screen, and they all 'charge' you at different times, you literally can't get off a melee counter for all of them. and if you only freeze them with your normal beam, it takes SO many fucking shots to kill them that you're likely getting bounced around by the other enemies.

it's a good game, but it isn't feeling like a metroid game in terms of the balance of combat and exploration/surprise. too much of the former and too little of the latter, at least so far (i'm only in the 3rd section).

got 2k18 yesterday but haven't had the chance to spend much time with it. Most of the complaints seem to be related to the MyCareer mode, which I've never found that engaging in the first place. The level of depth for the franchise mode is great if you care about arcane nonsense like the Stepien rule, 2 way contracts, draft-and-stash, and all that.

the gameplay never initially feels "right" in any of these iterations if you're used to a previous version, so i'm not too worried about that. I doubt i'll play many full games in handheld mode, but being able to sim seasons and take care of transactions while watching something else will be nice.

I have still literally never played anything but the handheld version of the console - I tried the first day I had it, didn't figure it out, and then never tried again

yeah i was having problems with this too until i realized that you can instakill frozen enemies by parrying next to them. i am loving the new combat mechanics but i agree that it is a little thin on the exploration so far. im only just past the first elevator though
