Dear LA,

my flight out of here goes this afternoon, I would love to hit up a "magical" spot before I leave.

I've been in this city many times before, sometimes for months (this time only one) and my feelings were a mix of being terrified, fascinated, disgusted, in pure awe and wanting to run as fast as I can.
Not this time, I might finally have fallen in love with this city.

So, what I'm thinking of is nothing like a food place or museum or anything, but a place with a certain vibe or view, like something that is sort of a mix of all of that.

Any recs?

I have a few spots like that, one on a part of Mulholland Drive where the view is just insane, especially at night, one is a basketball field on the beach with the craziest graffitis, etc. Something like that. (I still have a rental car so I don't care where it is at all, I'll get there.)

Thanks!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Culver_City_Stairs maybe? It isn't super magical (especially when it hasn't rained in months) but you can get views of most of LA, from the beach to WeHo to downtown. And it could be on your way to the airport. If you don't feel like taking the stairs (it is definitely a workout) there is a parking lot at the top but I think you need to pay.

oh man this is perfect, thank you so much. stairs, I want stairs, since I want to celebrate leaving in a real pathetic way, with an ipod, my favorite songs, and inwardly sobbing... stepping stairs fits right in!

thanks :)

(haha, I found El Matador first time I came to LA, I was yesterday! love it.)

There's a lot of cool "secret" stairs around LA in case you wanna check more out next time you're in town. A few of my friends bought a book about them and routinely go on hikes/go to the secret staircases. Some of them are pretty neat.

oh yea def., great idea, I'll get my hands on some book/guide, I never thought of that.
the only place I got to this time until my job was done last weekend was the Griffith Observatory, like sneak off, risk a speeding ticket, stand there for 5 minutes at night, enjoy the view, and rush back lol.

Next time, late February, I will try to be nicer to this city by hating it less and loving it more!

I've done 7 of the stair hikes in that book. it's not just stairs but also really steep streets, have seen people really struggle on some of those hikes, not recommended for people that are out of shape. there's a couple of stairs meetup groups, one meets every week at tomato pie in silver lake, think it's tuesday nights and it usually draws anywhere from 30-60 people.

eldred street in highland park is vicious but I love it

and yeah there are some great views along the way

I like to Lyft to my friends' house in Echo Park from Hollywood, just to see the look on the drivers' faces:

Potentially hitting up a late night tomorrow. Thinking of Droid Behavior 15 year or Exos

Edit: or maybe soft power because Droid Behavior is getting expensive

going to be moving there august '18 and i'm not entirely sure what kind of job to be looking for. honestly i'm not even really sure where to start. but i did visit a couple bars when i was there last that i might get in contact with closer to my moving date.

bar bandini seems like a smaller-scale version of the place i work now, though i haven't been there.
