Contrary take on Joi:

I liked her a lot. She has a similar arc to K--a created being, who starts to long for something more. In her first scene, she only reflects what he wants (Stepford wife, sultry outfit, etc.) But towards the end she becomes obsessed with the idea of K being special, and starts to speak about what she herself wants. You can just read that as her programming--since Alexas are probably programmed to make their owners feel special. But I think she can also be read as her own type of miracle--a created being that achieves some type of sentience, has her own feelings and desires, and decides that she too wants to be part of something bigger and is willing to die to be part of that. And she does die for it.

Her existence is so much more limited than Joe's, and her death really affected me. Joe gets to actually feel the rain on his hands; she maybe learns how to visually represent rain hitting her hands. Joe gets to actually touch someone during sex; she gets to closely track the movements of that sex worker. If I remember right, during the sex scene, when the camera has Joe's perspective we see a close almost total alignment of the holographic and real bodies. But when the camera has her perspective there's a long lag between the two bodies, and we're always aware of how separate they are. Joe thinks she's real; she always knows that she's not.

I think Hoeks gave one of the best performances and even if I wasn't entirely won over by the writing of her character, the majority of her scenes felt like they had some weird energy just waiting to explode. I also kinda like the idea that the scene I mentioned earlier (where she says "I'm the best one!", stabs K, kisses him, and then dives into the waves) was her mirroring Wallace's behaviour earlier in the movie (when he stabs the prototype in the stomach, kisses her, and then walks away to let her bleed out on the flaw).

The scene where he brings her out into the rain was probably my favorite part

Yeah. She was the only one that was having some fun with the role. She had an intensity to her, especially in the beginming of the movie. Her character got more ridiculous as it went but I can't fault the actress for that. Joi didn't do much for me. She was mad annoying.

I did feel bad for her though. Joi deserved a better dude to fawn over than a depressed, emotionally unavailable blade runner.

Luv was pretty much just right other than the dumb death sequence.

I still don't think of Leto as mature enough to be a bigwig nor does he seem smart enough to be an enfant terrible so his character is so off the mark for me.

it was weird when she was like "find the baby for me!" or whatever but that was just bad writing/exposition that she did her best with

Also how many god damn times do you need characters to reveal themselves walking towards the camera from the darkness.

also this movie did that thing where people say what the plot is in their dialogue, like luv saying "do your fucking job... find the baby"
i guess its better than having gosling narrate the entire thing

the same team that wrote the original wrote this script right.

i keep thinking about how the script/plot skeleton of the original movie and how it could've been sin city with flying cars if it didn't have a giant team of people working it on ensuring it wasn't.

not quite. only hampton fancher was involved with both movies. and he wrote the first draft of blade runner before david peoples was brought in to give his script more scope. i kinda wonder if a similar thing happened here, but for the worse? who knows
