i felt 0% bad about my salary after seeing our budget last year

some Elsevier updates:

https://www.timeshighereducation.com/news/german-universities-plan-life-without-elsevier

A consortium of all German research organisations is locked in hostile and so far unsuccessful contract negotiations with Elsevier, demanding full open access for German-authored papers and a model in which they pay per article published, not a flat journal subscription fee.

Part of their strategy is to demonstrate that German academics can operate without Elsevier subscriptions, and an increasing number of institutions have said they will not renew their contracts at the end of the year, now including the vast majority of Helmholtz centres, which have a combined revenue of €4.38 billion (£4 billion).

At the beginning of 2017, after negotiations faltered, some German universities went briefly without Elsevier access before the publisher restored it free of charge, giving Germany a dry run of what a national severance might be like.

Dr Köhler said that at two major German universities that were cut off in January, which he declined to identify, there were only "tens" of requests by academics to their libraries for papers they could no longer access, an unexpectedly low number. These were "easily handled with an inter-library loan", he explained, Germany's "main strategy" for coping without Elsevier.

and newer still: https://www.timeshighereducation.com/news/gold-or-green-elsevier-proposes-regional-open-access-model

In a blog, the company suggests that publishers could make the same article available under different terms on different continents, according to local open access preferences. Articles would most likely be made available under gold open access terms – freely available to all, in return for an article publishing charge – in Europe, where Elsevier is locked in disputes with several sectors that want to shift to this model.

The same article could be made available under green open access terms – whereby a version of a paywalled article is made widely available after an embargo period – outside the continent, given that other research-intensive countries such as the US, China and Japan have shown greater interest in a green approach.
...

However, Elsevier’s suggestion was criticised by some open access advocates, with Martin Paul Eve, professor of literature, technology and publishing at Birkbeck, University of London, accusing the publisher of “redefining” open access on its own terms.

“I do not think that Elsevier’s strategy for gold open access to be only readable within specific regions is viable,” he told Times Higher Education. “For one, it negates the very principle of open access that some readers should be excluded; the core reason that open access was invented.

“Second, I am unsure how Elsevier plans to implement this…if the work is under an open licence, then anyone could transfer this outside Europe legally anyway. This implies that Elsevier intends to license its material differently, once more changing the definition of open access.”

glad they're on the run a bit, anyway!

"BIBFRAME as Empty Vessel" and "Roadmap to Nowhere: BIBFLOW, BIBFRAME, and Linked Data for Libraries" by Jeff Edmunds. I read his paper "Zombrary Apocalypse: RDA, LRM, and the Death of Cataloging" yesterday and wanted to read more of his thoughts.

(I'll also send along scores JIFs for rehabilitation journals, since it looks like that's the preferred category for a few occupational therapy journals.)

is anybody here involved w radical reference? http://radicalreference.info/starting-local-collective

Things we could do include, but are not limited to

participating in protests
doing research for incarcerated people
helping people make FOIA requests (and their state equivalents)
developing research guides
supporting other activist projects with technical and research support
peer education about library issues
teach ins on open access, digital privacy, local issues
fact checking for radical journalists
digital archiving for activist groups
cataloging activist groups' libraries

i do foia requests frequently. i guess i never considered that would be a valuable skill outside of 9-5 drudgery. i could probably do a workshop with the dcpl/punk archive people on submitting foia requests and cost-effective legal research. hmmmm

Man who works for a university library for years and years, dies and leaves his money to the University to help the library. They use 1million of it to build a scoreboard "in his honor" because he sometimes watched football games on TV while in the hospital dying of colon cancer

I read the Deadspin article about him the other day, and I honestly don't see what the issue is. He gave the money as unrestricted funds, and by the account of his financial advisor, he didn't seem to care what happened with it
