Island of Second Sight by Albert Vigoleis Thelen is a great book
It takes place on Mallorca, but that's Spain, hey?

I liked it; it was a little rough around the edges, yeah, but it added a kind of funky appeal. Jane Eyre was better.

just plowed through this in one sitting
.... oh man i get the appeal finally. on to savage detectives.
also finally started reading this after getting it months ago, and i'd recommend it to anyone who is having trouble finding an entrance into the frankfurt school, as someone who has really only been able to finish minima moralia and illuminations

I was gonna make a thread, but it's probably more appropriately a question for you folk - why do so many people hate deckle edges? Is it the antiquated scrumpiness that motivates many publishers to produce them? I can understand that, I suppose, but are there less emotional reasons for why some have such an intense hatred of them? I don't care all that much either way, but sometimes I like them (almost always prefer a bit of texture). I've read some pretty strong opinions concerning them around these parts and elsewhere...

hi all - a tip of my tongue post -
does anyone know the book I'm thinking of - it was a small experimental one where the author filled the pages with JUST ideas for other things that they'd had, like story ideas and movie ideas. It was just a hundred pages of "A man finds a fish that can speak and then he...?" and others.
I remember reading about it about two years ago and I THINK the cover is blue, if that helps?

3/4 of the way through. Terrific. When I read Fowles I can't imagine being able to write even a single page of his prose.

Been enjoying Berlin Alexanderplatz but think i'll be tabling it for now; hit about 250 pages in and it's just kinda sloggy. Wonderful book, but just not what I need in my life at the moment.
Gonna try and track down a copy of Eumeswil for cheap.

Fine with the uneven edges, but on paperbacks they usually come along with french flaps which are the goddamn worst for reading/holding the first and last 100 pages.

Generally agree with this. Feel similarly about dust jackets on hardcovers, though obviously there's an workaround with them.

i don't use bookmarks and deckled edges makes it harder to flip the pages quickly to find my spot
, in addition to the pointless scrumpiness

Deckled or not would make 0% impact on whether I'd buy a book or not, but what value do deckled edges bring? They only seem to make using a book harder (page turning) and the only value I can think is that it looks more homemade/scrump
