Leaving tomorrow to hike a 10-day chunk of the John Muir Trail (Tuolumne Meadows --> Bishop Pass)! I've been been warily eyeing the fire burning on the doorstep of Yosemite, which has closed Highway 140 into the park. But the northern throughway (120) is still open! I'm mostly packed, but still need to finish up playing calorie tetris with my bear vault. Shooting for 3000 calories over 7 days; it's going to be tight.

I’m leaving tomorrow from Arequipa (coolest dang city) at 330am for a 2 day Colca Canyon hike. Going to be sleeping down in the bottom of the canyon. I’m so fucking jazzed.

my summer in the middle of lake clark state park in alaska continues to get stranger and stranger. i'm about to be the maid for my boss's family for two and a half weeks; he is a very laid-back career artist but his brother is a former deadhead turned ultra-devout Hasid with 8 kids. our log cabin's kitchen is being converted by our carpenter into a kosher kitchen. a specialist kosher chef has been flown in from NYC, and he is suddenly out here in the wilderness for the first time. there have been literal boatloads of kosher-friendly cookware arriving for weeks. it's a massive fuckin operation. at the same time, the boss has a subsistence fishing permit, which allows him to catch 200 salmon this week, which we are processing assembly-line style each day. one of my coworkers has been frantically stressing out about finding someone to feed his 40 alpacas and however many hedgehogs back home. we're running into bear and moose and eagles on the property every day. i'm livin in a sauna on the beach. life out here is mega weird :)
real heavy duty hikes are rare but im constantly roaming the forests looking for cool flowers n shit. i found a sick coyote skull. there are like 10 beaver dams within a 10 minute walk from my sauna.

I am staying on Lake Superior in northern Michigan but in addition to having an injured toe I am now sick so my plans to go on long hikes on the North Country Trail this week have been canceled and I am PISSED.
