i've known a couple (birthrighty) people that argued any and all criticism of israel is antisemetic and if you argued with them you were rabidly antisemetic. really gross shit.

i mean yeah but it's not unreasonable to expect a bit of nuance

if i say fuck the us govt cos they're a bunch of murdering pricks most people in this thread will just laugh because it's such a dumb, blunt, and poorly expressed position in spite of it being like... true

I don't know how much nuance I am expected to put into words about genocide. I made the bad mistake when the BBC news about Israeli soldiers offing Palestinians came on in the background to say "shocker, Israel still murdering pricks" - while being surrounded by our small kike club at work. oh boy, the US jews got into my face and declared me a kike traitor, I am probably not allowed to sit with them at lunch any more.

Just gave me a flashback to the time at passover when I said something about how maybe israel shouldn't have built the west bank wall and my grandpa told me that my grandmother was "rolling over in her grave". I believe I was 14 at the time.

oh yes.
for the longest time I thought my Berlin family jew clan was "liberal and modern", since they don't seem to give a shit about much really. and then I became older. and louder. and said things like "I wish someone would off this insane fucker Netanyahu already" at a family gathering at Hanukkah. Followed by asking why exactly we celebrate that holiday, "does anyone here actually give a shit about whatever fuckign temple?" that did not end well.

I am an unable to talk about Israel at all in my professional life and walk on eggshells around my family. I usually just get very quiet once people start talking about it.

Trudeau 'appalled' Canadian doctor was wounded in Gaza
Image
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has called for an investigation into the reported shooting of a Canadian doctor in Gaza.
Tarek Loubani says he was shot in the leg while providing medical services to protesters along the border between the Gaza Strip and Israel.
Dr Loubani said paramedics had worn fluorescent high visibility jackets to identify themselves as medics.
Mr Trudeau said Canada "deplores" the recent violence.

it's a very complex situation with centuries of context and a large number of different relevant factions, both foreign and domestic.

none of that historical context changes the fact that, at its core, the Israeli government is committing a slow, drawn out ethnic cleansing of Palestinians with enthusiastic bipartisan support from US lawmakers.

I discovered this very quickly at my current job. I was kind of taken aback because I didn't even think twice about referring to the conflict as a genocide since most of the planet would readily agree that it is. and then my coworker, a kid from a liberal upper class westchester jewish family, immediately sprung in to action arguing same 2 or 3 talking points/justifications/clarifications, including "how can you say they're killing off palestinians if palestinians reproduce at a much higher rate than israelis?? if anything, their population is growing, not shrinking at all" or the most common one, that the media vilifies israel for human rights violations while the big western powers commit human rights violations every day and they don't get the same level of scrutiny. how is that fair, huh?? all points that he must have learned from his parents at the dinner table since he's 20 and has basically lived in scarsdale his whole life, still does. I was immediately like "ohhhhhhh shit" and just shut the conversation down and never brought it up again. the owners of my company are his neighbors and their families are long time friends, also liberal wealthy suburban jews, so i was like no fucking way am i going to lose my job to be the office anti-semite.

similarly, i also learned very quickly that in NYC it does not turn out well when you tell a jewish person even a little bit sympathetic to israel that you worked at the UN. like they immediately trash the shit out of the UN, how they let the big 5 countries get away with murder, how they're inept as an organization, don't get anything done, all they do is talk and point fingers and make "resolutions" as if resolutions were commensurate with old man telling teens to get off his lawn. in the same breath, they hope that i have some kind of inside scoop on the hidden political agenda of the UN, a coalition of 193 countries, who, besides the US, every day routinely decry israeli terrorist activity and unlawful land acquisition/occupation. but, there MUST some secrets that would reveal the true machinations of the bad guys in the EU who are constantly ragging on poor israel, some eyewitness account of a conversation between big delegates about inching closer to snatching israel back from the jews and sending them, again, to wander the earth without a home.

i always thought people would find my UN experience kinda neat. turns out that no, almost all of the new york jews with money or long-standing ties with the jewish-american establishment openly despise and are very suspicious of the UN like all 193 countries are a bunch of bullies with some eternal jew-hating axe to grind. again, genuinely taken aback that otherwise upright people would think the UN, of all organizations, was a pile of junk that might as well not exist, all the good they end up doing, etc etc.
Nice day if it doesn't rain.

there are many jews in new york who will call you an anti-semite for voicing even the mildest complaint against the israeli government. on the other hand, there are many jews in new york who support the plight of the palestinians. in conclusion,

this isn't complicated

good to say: 'israel are dicks' or 'the israeli government is pursuing a morally abhorrent, genocidal occupation and those who support it are complicit'

bad to say: '[adjective] jews [verb]'

Hmm as an Israeli who worked at the UN, (and is a little bit sympathetic to Israel, though of course not to this administration), what Lockheed is describing seems a little bit hyperbolic. Israel deserves the level of scrutiny it receives at the UN, but having that forum used so frequently to point out injustices committed by Israel is what makes so many Jews and Israelis skeptical of the motives behind resolutions. The resolutions have mostly been effective in alienating Israel, unfortunately. That means that the UN as an institution has lost its legitimacy for a population that really could benefit from listening and engaging in good faith with other member states (and stop committing such heinous crimes).

This conflict really isn’t that simple. I understand why Israelis want their capitol to be recognized by the US and the world, but this embassy move is so careless and will have deleterious effects on any progress made lately in the peace process. As citizens of a young nation, international condemnation is processed in a different manner than for citizens of older, more established colonial powers. A lot of critics of Israel seem incapable of acknowledging the level of emotional involvement in nation-building that citizens of a younger state have, especially under the circumstances that the state was created in. Using rhetoric like genocide and apartheid (which I agree with) amongst supporters of the regime is obviously unproductive and a good conversation ender. Steering the conversation over these atrocities towards how you all are socially stigmatized by Jews seems a little self-indulgent. Hope y’all don’t get painted as office anti-semites! That’s the true tragedy of this conflict.

Also idk if I ever apologized for my posts on the first few pages. If anyone read me as a paranoid anti-Semite I would understand and I’m really sad if ppl felt they were boarding in a place like that and I was a part of making it feel hateful.

I’m really sorry for those posts and a significant portion of the time I don’t know what I was even trying to get at, but the ferocity of them and the imprecise language are the style of the rambling lunatics I see on YouTube and I’m really really sorry I was that kind of dangerous white person.
