the best things about timecop were the cars and the guy turning into goo. and the jcvd character, ("timecop") never seemed concerned enough when he'd return to the future and it was all fucked up

Ex Machina (Garland, 2015): Ideally in my opinion a work of science fiction should have some kind of new idea in it, and boy does this not have any of those. Still it is a decent thriller.

Baxter, Vera Baxter (Duras, 1977): I loved this but I probably could've hated it just as easily — it definitely needs an indulgent audience. But the atmosphere is incredible and I really enjoyed the tension between how the movie looks and (especially) sounds and what's going on inside it.

Beauty and the Beast (Herz, 1978): Plays up the story's horror elements, though not as much as I'd hoped. Still a fairly creepy adaptation full of lines like, "That white brow, eyelids like two white rose petals, a body trembling with tender disquiet. What if those rose-blossom lids lift and her eyes rest upon you?"

Good Time (Safdie & Safdie, 2017): I liked this. I was pretty tired when it started and wide awake when it ended. Pattinson was great and the camera totally succeeded at putting me in his vortex. I liked the shape of the plot. I like OPN obviously. The writing was fine and the amusement park was cool. Good movie.

Dead Man's Letters (Lopushanskiy, 1986): This was great. Desolate but not pointless, human but not sentimental or grandiose or reassuring.

three billboards was like a 6/10

tonally awkward, political commentary was a mess, minor characters (mainly the black ones) were an underdeveloped mess, humor too over-the-top for my taste and relying on shock value ("whoa check out the mouth on this lady! wow she kicked that guy!")

BUT

mcdormand, rockwell and harrelson were all tremendous and some moments were weirdly moving, and it rarely went where i thought it was going to go

Frances McDormand kept the character from being completely "Walladoo!"

Kate Beckinsale's rendition of Amazing Grace was an important early use of flagrant autotune

yeah it was a pretty basic love story but I really liked how naturalistic it was. what elevated it IMO was josh o' connor. his performance was really subtle but just seeing this guy slowly climb out of his anhedonic existence and rediscover his humanity was really thrilling and struck a personal chord with me. also loved the scene with his grandma giving him Gheorghe's number, and the scene with his dad before he left.Toggle Spoiler

also, my friend just told me she has a screener of Call Me By Your Name, we're gonna watch it this week. :awful:

Zabriskie Point (1970)
I think this ended up on my hard drive cause I was considering working in Death Valley this winter so I downloaded some movies set there. Good soundtrack, film kinda dragged in some times. I heard the original ending was the plane towing a FUCK AMERICA banner.Toggle Spoiler. so that kinda sums up the movie, directed by an Italian.

Yugoslavia: How Ideology Moved Our Collective Body (2013)
I got the chills a few times. Doesn't explain a whole lot directly, but has a lot of interesting footage

Mystery (2012)
This was okay. Decent acting, good characters. Kinda a sloppy story. I have a few other Lou Ye films, this was the first I saw, I'm interesting checking more out now. This did get released in mainland (5 of his 7 films did not).

Image
Antarctic Journal (2005)
I wish this was better. Really bleak setting obviously. Sloppy story, poor pacing, nothing is explained. I want to see Hansel and Gretel though.

Image
Strange Days (1995)
Completely unashamed sci-fi. I'm surprised I had never heard of this. Good.

strange days owns despite the totally nonsense romance subplot in which perhaps the coolest person of all time pines for the shittiest most selfish dudeToggle Spoiler

it feels like it has untapped cult blow-up potential. it’s actually prescient in a way movies rarely are i think. kathryn bigelow what happened

pre-code horror double feature yesterday

the old dark horse (james whale, starring karloff)

Image

white zombie (victor halperin, starring lugosi)

Image

both are good, but old dark house was a lot better. much better structure and general intrigue among characters, as opposed to white zombie, which has zero compelling characters outside of lugosi (who's name is MURDER)

we also tried watching "the ghoul" with karloff but the print on youtube had almost indecipherable audio and bad video quality

this film definitely has a serious cult following, and it has finally been getting some serious love from programmers over the last few years

as to what happened... she got screwed over by Hollywood

those pre-strange days flicks + the hurt lock are all still great tho
