yeah that movie has really stayed with me. my mother watched it last night and her takeaway was that the girl is a figment of the writer's imaginationToggle Spoiler. I don't think I agree and I think that take is refuted by certain elements in the film but it's an interesting thought and there might be something to it. I think it's quite a unique movie

ha...i really don't know, madness

it's a real slooow burner. that's the warning I'd give. I'd call it a psychological drama, as opposed to a psychological thriller

i thought burning was like, solid, distinguished arthouse filmmaking with a little bit less substance than i was expecting. the girl's character is painfully two-dimensional (which I guess is par for the course for murakami, not a reader of his) and i was less enamored of either of the central performances than most people.

I read some when I was in jail (145 books in 11 months, same time I read and was baffled/confused by Glamorama, jeez, 10+ years ago) and didn't hate them. Most likely would never read now. I may try it out just to see. Slow burners are not my jam these days.

the mandico short is mindblowing, even better than wild boys in my opinion
the other shorts in ultra rêve are awesome too, after school knife fight in particular hits a very special spot for me

I made it through the 1940s in my lil project. Not gonna rank them or anything, they are all 3.75-5 star movies. Onward

The Philadelphia Story
The Lady Eve
The Magnificent Ambersons (too high, no recollection)
Shadow of a Doubt
Double Indemnity
Brief Encounter (my god, Celia Johnson)
My Darling Clementine
Black Narcissus
Treasure of the Sierra Madre
White Heat

this is a great list!!

I see some overlap between this list and the "stanley cavell & the comedies of remarriage" series anthology is screening later this month. if you haven't seen some of the other films they are screening, I heartily recommend you check em out. the awful truth in particular!

oh, and futurist, thanks for the apocalypse after screens... that's playing at anthology tomorrow, and I think I'm going to have to leave work early to check it out...

I saw 9 fingers (the latest film by french punk filmmaker f.j. ossang) last night. a cool mix of classic noir, german expressionism, and silent serials with a healthy dose of philosophizing and a very dry sense of humor

how has no one ever told me about this dude before?! if you like guy maddin, but wish he maybe reined it in a little

"Hold the Dark" - I was really into it for about the first half maybe 2/3. Some great set pieces but this was ultimately a major step down from "Green Room" and even "Blue Ruin." Hated the ending and what the movie (i guess?) was saying. Bummer.
wimbledon, strawberries, bubbles, please protect me. happy midsumma, hope you spend it in your heart, everyone is there. bitch.
