Exotica (1994)

This was really fucking great. Best movie I've seen in months, and probably one of the best movies I've seen about trauma, sadness, and confusion period.

I like Samsara and I think a lot of mediocre films have tried to mimic it since with a lot less success.

"La nuit americaine" (F. Truffaut, 1973)
amazing love letter to films + cinema

had a good laugh at director ferrand / truffaut saying
Shooting a film is like a stagecoach ride in the Old West. When you start, you are hoping for a pleasant trip, but pretty soon, you just hope you’ll reach your destination.

dangerous game (1993) - abel ferrara

ferrara takes his turn for a self-exorcism after ‘bad lieutenant’ using keitel as his avatar. really gruelling but it hits some exhilarating moments. i thought madonna was great for what is a pretty thankless role

Image
medea (1969) - pier paolo pasolini

Image
teorema (1968) - pier paolo pasolini

terence stamp plays an elusive christ-like figure who is so hot that he sends an entire bourgeois family into a spiritual crisis

Image
inauguration of the pleasure dome (1954) - kenneth anger

Image
the outfit (1973) - john flynn

surprised this isn’t talked about more alongside other 70s disillusioned american new wave cinema. an effectively cold revenge story/neo-noir from john flynn (same guy who did ‘rolling thunder’). not as good as that film imho but it shares a lot in its dna to stuff like 'night moves', friedkin, peckinpah etc

All About My Mother - so beautiful and sensitive; a film that highlights how important women are in our lives - the tagline ("PART OF EVERY WOMAN IS A MOTHER/ACTRESS/SAINT/SINNER") is a distillation of what works best about this movie. every woman here - cis and trans or in between - is a mother to another woman in some way, taking care of each other and putting themselves second. Almodovar reflects and refracts motherhood with classic Hollywood tropes (i am a sucker for movies have a play/another movie inside itself) and some of the camera work in this is really amazing. one thing that kept me a bit removed from being 100% emotionally connected to this story is the change in perspective - from the son Esteban to Manuela, then introducing several additional characters. it was hard for me to anchor myself to one person.

yay jb and i stan hard for Almadovar and this is one of his biggest/most popular films so it was weird that i hadn't seen it yet. i'd also suggest starting with Volver and then moving to Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.

Volver --> All About My Mother --> Women on the Verge --> Julieta --> The Skin I Live In and then figure out what you like best and explore the rest based off that.
