I've seen this book universally recommended. Logical Chess Move by Move: https://www.amazon.com/Logical-Chess-Every-Explained-Algebraic/dp/0713484640

Although it isn't only about openings, I think it covers the principles of an opening really well.

I don't want to come off as a supposed expert or anything, because I am an amateur too.

An important advice that I got was to not play openings (like, don't play "Kings Indian" or "Slav Defense" or "Queen's Gambit") because those openings have different systems that, unless you've studied every possible outcome and every position, you can easily mess up if you don't play them a particular way. I was told to:

1. Develop towards the center, so that your pieces are trying to control the four squares in the middle
2. Develop minor pieces first. So, develop your knights and bishops first, and move the pawns up for that purpose only.
3. Castle early
4. Don't move the pawns around the king after you've castled

Also, my rating improved by like 100 points when I started to focus on my undefended pieces. My biggest focus on my games right now is to make sure no pieces are left undefended (which I'm failing at in our game right now).

Chess.com has a "lessons" section that is good. I use it all the time. It goes through beginner, intermediate, and advanced opening principles.

I'd also be down. I mainly play on lichess.org. I could set up a live tournament on there if a few people are interested?

what's the deal with lichess? seems like the preferred site for a lot of people. I tried a little bit but I hate that the board doesn't scale to my browser window.

I think you can scale the board size way up when you're playing. I like it because it's nice and clean looking and it's non profit.

Try reading "Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess." The exercises in that book really helped me get better at the game (I'm still not very good though.) Super simple and easy book to complete. Really fun too.

also :

-the after game computer analysis thing is quite helpful to show you when you made nonsense moves, and also tells you if you played good, or if you won because your opponent just played really bad

-I would advise to actually play openings. Choose one, learn the basics about it and play it a lot of times in blitz games. Once you understand the traps that are hiding behind a gambit you get some pretty funny games.

-castling is not an option, it is mandatory

-pawns are cannon fodder, knights/bishop can be exchanged to your advantage (i will save a bishop over a knight most of the time), rooks/queen are key pieces and should not be used to chase after small fry.
