Finally saw this.

It was more enjoyable than I expected (I did not like Force Awakens), but it also didn't really make a lot of sense and the plot was pretty bad.

I just don't really see the value of making the people in the OT lose to the First Order, who are largely treated as a joke.

Some leaks from The Last Jedi novelization, some interesting stuff in there, Rian is obviously well versed in a bunch of the EU.

Han Solo carved a Leia figurine out of Endor wood the night before the Battle of Endor. It is burned years later, during a brief memorial service for Solo, before the evacuation of D’Qar.
Chewbacca fixes all of the ill-advised modifications that Unkar Plutt made on the Millenium Falcon.
R2 was going to join Rey on her climb to Luke but gave up after one step. His flying capabilities are no longer functional, apparently.
We learn that Kylo Ren used the Force to protect himself from Chewie’s bowcaster blaster
Rey is not worried about Luke’s reluctance to train her. She’s good at two things. Salvaging broken items and waiting. “Patience.”
C-3PO restarts his droid spy network.
A conscious Leia reaches out to the fleet and tries to use the Force to call out to Luke Skywalker — to no avail.
Her Force abilities are strong, with a keen ability to sense the emotions and feelings of others — even from a substantial distance.
Leia was not happy about Luke abandoning the “fight,” due to his failure training Ben Solo.
As a youngling, Ben Solo often played with Han’s dice — where he adored and admired his father growing up.
As a kid, Kylo would use the Force to destroy items around the house, which Han and Leia were very concerned about at the time. “There’s too much Vader in him.
Kylo Ren does not fire on Leia with his Tie-Silencer because he feels she is not angry at him.
Kylo Ren would have frozen/stopped the missile fired at Leia but the moment caught him off guard.
The Force can only reach Luke when he dreams, due to him turning off the Force.
Two of the ancient Jedi texts are given names: Aionimica and Rammahgon.
Luke asks if Rey is part of a Jedi lineage or some sort of royalty. It’s here that Luke learns Rey is an orphan.
More details on Luke’s motivation in burning the Jedi library and yearning to die are revealed.
Snoke only keeps Hux around for his technical expertise.
Luke and R2-D2 explored the galaxy for decades — more details revealed on their adventures.
Luke tells the caretakers of Ahch-To that Rey is his niece.
The Force bond with Rey and Kylo Ren enables her to explore/access Kylo’s set of Force skills.
Rey accesses Kylo’s Force powers, while he accesses her memories.
Kylo Ren did build his first lightsaber
Rey is a manifestation of the will of the Cosmic Force.
The will of the Cosmic Force fell asleep once the Sith were destroyed and remerged during Luke’s exile.
The Living Force is the energy of life.
The Cosmic Force is the will of the universe.
If Rey and Kylo Ren would not have touched hands, Luke would have gone with Rey back to the Resistance.

Also have to mention I enjoyed Ken Liu's Adventures of Luke Skywalker or whatever. A series of short stories about the wacko places Luke and Artoo get to as they search the galaxy for Jedi lore.

a throwaway line about Rey learning some of Ren's Force moves would have cut down on the number of "She is such a Mary Sue!!"" statements I've had to read.

Yeah i feel like, the general vibe of STAR WARS to these fans is so different from mine growing up. i like the vibe of stuff like Dark Forces and Tie Fighter or even the West End rpg and like, all the grimy shit, but this is all robes and jedi legacies and force mystic bullshit. liek i love that stuff in the OG movies but all this kinda stuff feels different in a way i'm not good at articulating. so much more stuffy and dumb. like i even liek KotOR but that's definitely veering in this direction. but even then there's like, humor and stuff. maybe that's the problem, these ppl forget it's supposed to be funny too?

yeah, I mean the Force was all cool and mysterious in the OT but they didn't get too much into the details, but I think the key was that everything with the Force was tied into personal relationships and personal stakes.

Luke's father turned to the Dark Side and now is a super bad guy. Luke meets his former teacher who was partially responsible for his dad turning bad. Kenobi & Yoda hope to redeem their failures through Luke. Palpatine wants to rule forever and is ready to kick his #1 to the curb because his younger son is suddenly around.

The PT tried to do this but it got stupid - Oh, Yoda taught Dooku who taught Qui-Gon who taught Obi-Wan who taught Anakin and Luke. Threepio was created by Kid Anakin, blah blah blah.

Even KOTOR worked because so much of it was about personality and choices and relationships.

Once you start to get into the history of the Sith or whatever, it gets a little barfy.

Even the Mortis stuff on The Clone Wars & Rebels is pretty eye-rolly for me.

That's because the Force and the people who use it are the least interesting thing about Star Wars.

Yeah in that whole list I think the key bit of info worth knowing is Leia wants to save Kylo, as a mother presumably would, and there is still good in him, at least in the first half

I'm flicking through that bluray rip right now, wow Snoke CGI is good. Maybe the best CGI person type face animation ever? (so far)
I'm still a Tarkin apologist, and thought while not perfect it served a purpose well.. but this is several cuts above, at least in the extreme close-ups. The mid distance stuff is a bit fuzzier.
