the first episode is promising, I enjoyed it a lot. it reminds me more of ex-machina than the real world, and not just because of the architecture and design of the house (which is beautiful). it's sleek and quiet, but with a sinister undertone. it feels like a very modern take on reality tv and its tropes.

The fairly banal, matter of fact analysis from the studio supports this. Although the classic japanese TV staff laugh track maybe doesn't.

I like how the show plays with the tension between transparent production manipulation (obvious type casting and enforced gender segregation of the house and activities) and genuine interactions between the housemates that contest those boundaries. the added cultural expectations that the panel projects onto the housemates is a clever element. I'm watching this as an anthropological case study of young japanese urban dwellers rather than a big brother knockoff to justify binge watching yet another netflix show.

The fact that they watch themselves plus commentary and Twitter discussion from viewers every week is disturbing. I can't imagine living in that house

totally loving this show. the commenter with glasses is hilarious.

does anyone know any background about him or the other commenters? i read that they were japanese pop culture figures of some sort. they remind me a bit of the original judges from iron chef

it was so fucked up when yuki went in on barista (holy shit i dont know why i cant remember her name for the life of me) about her aspirations or whatever. it felt like a personal attack at me, tbh! like he's acting like it's so lofty for her to want to open a cafe, and it might be a bit romantic, but she has experience in the industry and knows she likes it. meanwhile he's a got dang tap dancer and acting like he's on the world's most tried and true path to successToggle Spoiler

i think the only of the guys i like at this point is the hairdresser, he was my least favorite at first but he charms you as the show goes on

yuriko is probably the most boring one to me, but it seems like everyone is obsessed with her on that show

Yukis rant makes sense as the show goes on IMO
He's been training as a tap dancer since he was 7 and is apparently pretty accomplished. He's also awful at expressing himself. There was no consent for that advice which is what made it ugly but based on how judgmental everyone is towards slacker baseball mochachanna man and how minori's sister treats her in their first meeting, it seems more typical to be openly critical of one another

tap dance dude's insecurity about his own profession/career is so obvious. constantly needs to put people down for taking a day off work or not having their career planned at age 23 because he himself prob knows he's fucked lol. either that or he's just a dick

yeah, i'm guessing it's because she's like an anime girlfriend archetype. just too saccharine to be realistic and def the dullest imo.

Yeah, Arman is so not my vibe. And the newest girl who likes him is a ditz. Why don't they get quirkier characters? I guess this kind of show would attract dinguses.
