the near-escape definitely had the ill-conceived horror thing of like...the drama of this moment is staked on the question of whether or not she'll escape here, but she obviously won't because it'd make the show nonsense, so there's no actual drama. feeling the show repeatedly doubling down on the "looks like she won't escape here...but what if she DOES escape here!" was exhausting and boring. also the whole malick Mom sequence at the end felt like a cheap attempt to suspend the moment of hope before the bullets start ripping into the side, but it didn't work for the same reason the moment needed to be suspended: the plane getting shot up was a foregone conclusionToggle Spoiler

agreed that emily at the airport worked well although the security agent growling "THE law" and then following it up with "You know, like in Kafka" was a little too ridiculous for me

did they ever explain exactly what the irradiated earth thing was about? i remember them mentioning it in the first season, but not specifics. i thought it was funny that...at the beginning of those sequences they put the workers in a surprisingly convincing cracked-earth hellscape, then by the end they were just in like...a barn, on a parking lot, in a normal field. maybe ~ they work in the hell earth but return to safety at night ~ but it still felt a little goofy

Whoa I missed the "like in Kafka" line.

I guess my biggest concern is this just turns into torture porn. It's already pretty close.

i like this season so far, no major issues. happy to see less of the waterfords lol... junes flight has been tense and pretty well managed. the routine and tedium of the days as presented in s1 would have dragged reaaaally hard in a new season imo and i think they managed a shift kinda admirably.

im actually a bit nervous about whats going to happen now that june been caughtToggle Spoiler

The Cat Power ending.

we might be back to a few routine and tedious episodes. they have to stretch this out for at least one more season, you know.

the household is going to begin unraveling soon, though. mrs waterford could get in trouble for abuses or be overcome with guilt, mr waterford will be outcast by the other commanders, and aunt lydia will (hopefully) help june out. nick's definitely gonna bite it.Toggle Spoiler

This show does a good job of giving you these little blossoms of hope that are just waiting to plucked by the ugly hand of utter hopelessness.

IIRC in the book, the ecological apocalypse allows Gilead to take over. The fallout destabilizes the US government enough to allow an uprising.

Beyond that, it's just a vague Children of Men sort of thing where the Earth has gone to shit.

I kind of wonder if they'll do a post-script like in the book with the whole academic symposium on Gilead thing.

As is the case with most dystopias, I'm far more interested in the ancillary details like how did they get rid of anything branded/how did they prevent a military revolt when turning US forces into Guardians, how much support is there for the regime, etc. etc.?

i feel like they've tried to paint a picture for some of that with the flashbacks

but it usually just seems over the top/hard to believe, like the coffee shop misogynist or the nurse that was talking about "fit parents"

The coffee shop misogynist kind of comes out of nowhere. The nurse makes a little more sense given that they allude to the ongoing fertility crisis.

But like, timeline-wise, was stuff like the coffee shop misogynist and the lynching of the professor before or just after the terrorist attack that Gilead used as cover to suspend the Constitution.

Does any of this matter? Probably not, but it's the stuff I find interesting. I dunno.
