Also, it was only in reading a recap that I realized this wasn't the season finale. Season 1 had 10 episodes, I assumed so did this one. But no, it appears it might be 12 or 13? Stuff like Wikipedia isn't helping on this and neither is Googling but it's clear it wasn't the finale from the recaps. I was fascinated by it as a finale. But I think I'm not 100% ready for another one any time soon. We'll see if a week off changes my mind.

It's 13

I thought this was the finale as well. Yvonne was doing a press tour promoting the season finale last week.

I guess Nick's position as an Eye means he basically has dirt on everyone, now including Eden, which might explain his laissez faire attitude toward being nice to her.

i think the big awful scene in this episode was hard to watch, and sensationalistic, but felt (in the context of the show) relatively grounded and pulled-off? like, considering what a trainwreck a lot of recent stuff has been, that was affecting. at the same time, i don't know, so much of whether the show responsibly handles it is going to depend on how they frame it in episodes to come. i i guess i'm not really sure how i feel about it!

the repeated, protracted separations from hannah punctuated by a guard insisting that they have to go NOW were like, slapstick funny. it reaaaaaally felt like the show trying to squeeze every last drop from the scene in terms of runtime and emotional return

also, the looseness of the last 10 minutes was exactly what bugs me about this show. nick can hide june in an combination office building/factory for months+, but commander waterford, putatively one of the most powerful people in gilead, can't find a spare room for 20 uninterrupted minutes? what would precipitate hannah and her chaperones having to leave so suddenly? why would guards just show up at an abandoned school out of nowhere? why wouldn't Nick, an Eye, be able to pull rank on a couple chucklehead guards on patrol? also, how would this ever stay a secret? like, even if Hannah's parents didn't sign off on her disappearing for a few hours, is the idea that Hannah, a child, would never mention "wow, i saw my real mom the other day" to her new parents or to her classmates or anything?

obviously I don't think all these questions need to be answered for this show to hang together, necessarily, but this show's scaffolding feels so flimsy that I'm always bumping up against this stuff. I feel like, in the writer's room, they might excuse this stuff with the justification that an authoritarian regime is characterized precisely by seemingly-omnipresent threat that exerts itself at arbitrary times and to arbitrary effect. but the show's execution tries to split the difference between that and (as we saw in last episode) a material, realpolitik reading of how this world came to be, and the friction between those two parts never really feels good to me

It's possible the Commander was setting Nick up in some way though right? Nick has like 100 reasons to be killed at this point. Although I doubt they would just leave June out there all alone. I dont know, i try not to follow this show's questionable logic too closely.

yea i sort of read the nick part as a set up as well, and i think you’re meant to at least believe that’s possible but knowing the shows trajectory, i dont think they’ll ever address it adequately

At this point though everyone in the Waterford household is compromised and I think Nick is sort of the locus of that. Like, if he goes, so go the Waterfords.

I guess it'd make sense if Eden reported him, at least partly out of fear that despite his not giving a shit, he might report her (esp if she feels like he'd be glad to be rid of her)

i didn’t parse that as a setup at all but you all could be totally right. kinda surprised i didn’t actually because when june did her “and you never will” bit to waterford my immediate response was that she’d just sold nick down the river—it’s not like there are any other men around she could have reasonably spent much time with

i think the only reason i didn’t assume that was the case is that i don’t have enough faith in the show, lol

I totally lost track of the plot here and was thinking the Commander was in the same position as his wife, in it definitively not being his child but yeah, he's supposed to think it's his and that makes that a more severe comment, huh? I just thought it was the same sort of picking at an open wound sort of thing it'd be if she'd said it to Serena.

they could draw this series out in so many bullshit ways and i hope they don't. i thought the bomb was going to be a sign that they were willing to be a little s1 Game of Thrones but it apparently didn't really change anything. like we could still totally be in the waterfords house in season 5, if they wanted to

god, crazy ep. I feel like I say shit like this every week but I'm really not sure i'm gonna have the will to watch next season.

also this is so, so dumb to point out, given everything about this show, but I cringed when June filled up the water bottles. a house that secluded would probably be on a well with an electric pump, (or more likely given how nice the house was, a cistern with delivered purified water) which wouldn't work, since clearly the electricity was off

I mean they kinda have an out to go as much as they want since they still have the epilogue from the book to use on the very last episode that will tie everything up, I'm hoping the next is the last tho, 4 at the very most, Gilead already seems like it's beginning to break apart anyways

also, the Emmys better do the right thing this year and give the best supporting actress nod to Serena and not Aunt Lydia
Yyvone Strahovski has been on same level as Elisabeth Moss this season

I thought for sure June was going to shoot the Commander and force/compel Serena to flee with her to Canada and next episode would be them Thelma and Louis-ing it up through northern Maine.

yeah that ep was “fly” level . stellar acting across the board and especially from moss, i’m impressed with how much she went all in on the labor scene. relieved that they havent done a serena joy face turn like i thought they might earlier on which really would have undermined what makes her character so compelling. i kind of want the aunt lydia face turn tho

Serena will stay a tragic character with no redemption and go down with the ship, which truthfully she should
none of the central figures to forming Gilead deserve redemption no matter what they do

Do we know the Waterfords were central in forming Gilead, or are they just forced to play the game well for survival. I have some very remote feeling Serena might eventually redeem herself by throwing herself on a sword.

We have had several flashbacks about them, if not being the core of the formation, then being major players in the pre-Gilead period in terms of advocating for the ideas of it. Serena, in particular, seems to have been a central intellectual leader in making it sound as though it was a woman's duty to go about things in this way, in order to solve the infertility crisis.

yeah even with the sympathy we feel towards Serena they've done a good job of reminding us of how much of this mess falls on her shoulders as well.

Definitely didn't see a handful of things in this last episode coming.

Somewhat fascinated but slightly dubious as to where they're going with Bradley Whitford, as well as in the main storyline...
