- There were no masons, but there were several opportunities for players to connect during the game. Reagan and Gorbachev could use THE RED TELEPHONE to contact one another once per game. I'd envisioned this as being used in a situation where a launch might be imminent, but they used it immediately and built a Superpower WC cabal.
- Additionally, the Hawks could contact (anonymously) their killing factions on alternate nights. That's the [REDACTED] in the rules. Ecto immediately tried to connect with the Contras but Ampersand waited till his second opportunity.
- There were two US players and two USSR players who lacked a Superpower WC: the hawks and the moles. Everyone else had Superpower, Imperialist/Communist, Faction WCs available.
- In each of the killing factions, one player had only a faction WC, an EXTREMIST Contra (TUE) and a RADICAL RAF (Grouchypants).
- The US Bodyguard carried 50 luftballoons and the Soviet bodyguard carried 49. If the paramilitaries had gotten both items and combined them to form 99 luftballoons, they could have released them to trip the Early Warning System into thinking missiles had been launched. I'd envisioned this as a way to break a stalemate if both the US and USSR had all their nuke items but were holding back in a MAD scenario. It turned out to be harder to get the items than I had assumed.
