here are a few i took years ago on a canon ae-1. i am looking to get an entry level dslr sometime in the spring; any suggestions?

upper entry-level with kit lens: take a look at the nikon d5000 620 euros, Canon EOS 450D (digital rebel xsi) 560 euros and Pentax K20D 660 euros

the Pentax is the best of these imo and was considered mid-level when it came out, but now its price has dropped from 1300 euros to 660 euros with kit lens, it's an awesome deal

flickr seems to reduce the resolution of my photos. Where do you guys host your shots? Or it could be the way I'm saving them in photoshop makes them more blurry when they are uploaded to flickr?

Yeah those got blurry. I guess it could be using a smaller monitor at work compared to my 21" at home that they look like this, but whatever.

this looks like a great camera, but the price in canada is still about $1300. i am looking for something significantly cheaper, which makes dwb's suggestion of the K-x the number one contender at this point. are there any entry level dslrs coming out early next year that i should hold out for?

The price is that high because it's out of production. You can find near-mint used K20Ds for ~$500. Check Pentaxforums' buy/sell/trade forum.

I got mine for $725 new in December 2008, for reference.

oh hehe check this out - got a cheap-as-chips polaroid back for my Bronica. Messed up a bunch of shots but a few worked. Here's a nice enough pic of my girlfriend Johanna. Note the film is well expired:

No matter how cheap the gear, polaroid appeal always sticks. I guess I'll dig mine up out of the basement in the winter holidays and try to make some christmas shots

I still haven't come around buying a prime yet, my uncle's been lending me his 50 mm/ f1.8, but it doesn't have AF on the d60. Taking pictures which require quick focus (wanted to get the wineglass here sharp) are such a hassle without autofocus

Get the nikor 35mm/f1.8 or go for the +100€ 50mm/f1.4 ? or even more for the sigma 50mm/f.1.4?

go for a 50mm 1.8 or 1.4. wouldn't get too hung up on the extra .4 aperture, it becomes a bit too much in most scenarios anyway. 50mm is what i use almost exclusively now, just seems to be the perfect angle and the glass is usually great and sharp for the price. 35mm lenses often seem to autofocus slower, which is strange. but that might just be what i've used.

The 35 will be a lot more generally useful than the 50, but get both. The 50 is only like $100, right?

The 35 is basically the FOV equivalent of the film days 50 aka "normal." (28 is actually a lot closer but I dunno if Nikon makes one.)

Yea, the 35 is like a 50 on an FX which I hope should still be ok for portait. Unfortunately the 50 1.8 for 80€ is only af-d compatible (the D60 is af-s and af-i) http://www.nikonians.org/nikon/slr-lens.html, so I can't use autofocus on it.

Since I'm still at novice level, I need af and the cheapest 50 with it is the 1.4 for 350 €. 35 is like 200 € and has af-s. hmm but you're right getting both the 35 and the 50 1.8 seems like a better deal than only the 50 1.4

You know, manual focus isn't the end of the world. Especially for portraiture. Pros used it for decades. Lots of Canon dudes buy Pentax Takumar 50/1.4s because they're dirt cheap and better optically than the modern-day AF equivalents. You might look into that.

A few euros more back then for the d90 would have saved me the money I now spend on lenses

For the takumar I'd need a M42-Nikon adapter to get infinity focus because of flange difference, whereas the Canon dslrs don't need the optical element I think. The adapters are with glass, so I'd lose image quality.

If I buy the correctional element, it will be more expensive than just getting a nikon 50mm f 1.4 with manual focus.

But Im coming around, I guess having one lense with only manual can't hurt, forces you to work on focusing.

Bought myself the Canon T1i for christmas, expecting the 50mm/f1.8 as a gift. It's been 10+ years since I used an SLR but I'm picking things back up quickly. I'm also getting blown away by everything that can be done now with digital/computers. Digital ISO adjustments, Photoshop Lightroom. I've been reading the strobist blog and thinking about getting flash/wirelesstrigger/stand/umbrella kit so I can play around with off camera flash stuff.
