i'm intrigued, gonna look into those. i'd sell off a bunch of seldom used expensive gear to get something seriously fresh in the mix.

thanks a lot dude, its just coming to surface so we haven't had much feedback, it means a lot. we've been holed up since new years working on both projects day in and day out. we're also rehearsed to play both projects live and not pull some hipster laptop bullshit. only thing on the backing track would be the drums. any synth, bass or even guitar we use on these would be played in the flesh. the rnb is produced by me and my friend dave but there's 5 ppl in the live act, 4 synths and a bass player lmao, ridiculous set up. basically working hard as fuck all day and night.

as for my studio pic, we know an engineer who just started workin there and to break him in the studio lets him bring us in at night and record. i been to electric lady and this studio is considerably less baller though their console is still like 250k and they got a room big enough to record an orchestra. we recorded one of the songs for sofa club's ruby red EP in there that night. it came out good but not THAT much better than when we regularly plug into the apogee duet at home. it's just nice to have access to ballin ass compressors and consoles and shit and an engineer to do all the chores.

yeah, ha, i mean obviously for your stuff you dont need that studio, but its sick youve got access to the arsenal. keep that engineer close. i like the idea of 4 keyboard players live. ive talked to so many people about how i wished thered be a band with a bunch of motherfuckers on stage playin keyboards, but i guess its hard to actually find the folks to make it happen

yeah we lucked out as far knowing/recruiting great players. pretty much everyone but me is virtuoso status. next weekend 3/5 members of the RnB band are getting paid $1500 to play beatles' sgt peppers in full with a string and horn section so i like to think our live act don't slack as far as musicianship goes.

thanks for those drum machine reccs im gonna follow up on that. we've had pretty good results with run of the mill shit like yamaha motifs and roland fantoms so we're really excited to get new gear for the next batches of songs.

This thing sounds pretty sweet - has anyone owned one before? Able to be found for sub-$500?

Consensus seems to be that it's a bit of a toy, and other demos don't sound as good, but this demo makes it sound pretty versatile, I dunno...

def not a toy, lowest price i've personally come across is $500. wish i had the cash back then but ahwell.

Someone on Craigslist is selling a broken JX8P for $100. Broken, because:

the portamento function doesn't work, aftertouch doesn't work (I know this can be repaired though, it's a common problem for all JX-8Ps with a serial # inferior to 717800). Sometimes, when playing at high volume, certain sounds will produce crackles/distortion...this could be caused by a faulty VCA. The "EDIT" potentiometer is not working properly so a SYSEX MIDI editor is required to edit the presets.

On the one hand, $100!!! On the other, it seems useless if I can't edit the presets and I don't know anyone in town that works on synths and how much it would cost.

Thinking on buying myself a Juno G for my birthday. Seems like a pretty good choice. Anyone know any good sites to get one on the cheap?

i would buy that busted jx8p for a hundred any day. its worth it just to get the authentic roland analog poly string pads. who cares about presets and porto, its easy to dial in sounds manually on those things.

Ah, the 8P sold before I could grab it.

I think I'm just going to save up for a Juno 106. There's one on Craigslist for $600 right now. If I bought it I'd have no money to survive on for the next week and a half. Tempting.

Sorta synth-related - anyone know more about these Carlo Robelli keyboards?

The chick from Blues Control uses one and it sounds pretty cool. I know they are/were the Sam Ash brand, but I can't find that particular one anywhere.

I have one of these:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ROLAND-HS-60-SYNTHESIZER-JUNO-106-/190538875404?pt=Keyboards_MIDI&hash=item2c5d00820c
Identical to a 106.

You might find one on Craigslist or a Music Go Round or something

Damn, too bad he's only shipping within the USA - I'm in Canada.

I forgot about the HS-60. Seems ideal both for price and for the portability/built-in speakers for practicing (probably won't be able to make too much noise at my new apartment). You can just mute them with a 1/4" adapter in the jack, right?

No dice on Canadian shipping.

But synths are popping up locally almost daily now.

Just this morning: JX3P with controller, mint, for $500, or $300 for just the JX3P. Unfortunately my bank account is a little shorter than I thought it would be. That, and I saw some people nabbing JX3Ps for $225 in this thread and elsewhere, so I figure I can hold out (and I think I'd prefer the Juno 106/HS-60 anyways).

That is a great price for the combo JX3P/PG800.
but it is cumbersome to edit without the PG800, and for $500 I would spend a bit more (or hold out) and get something you can edit on the fly

Korg Poly-800 is great for that 80's sound and is pretty damn cheap.

Just picked up a Poly 800 for $175 on eBay. A little more than I wanted to pay, especially considering I let one (with mods) slip away by accident earlier in the week for $125, but at least I'll finally have something to play with.
