Unless one of the aforementioned boards is essential reading, perhaps I should?

Well, welcome. By the time you realize how much card collecting is a waste of time and money, you'll already be too sucked in. You can quit, but you never leave. Some kind of horrid drug. All of the stuff coming out now (at least to me) is complete shit and not worth the dollars the boxes/packs command. I mostly buy vintage pre 70's and earlier, save for a few things. My dad is how I got into this hobby when I was really little, and I thought I had quit, but nope, sucked me back in around 2001?

Bold man and I try to go to card shows here and there, but he is at college now. I'm probably going to a show on Sunday....local shows usually suck though.

Yeah, not sure which I recommend most. I usually lurk blowout the most. It's nice seeing what's new and current, and looking at all the cards people post is sensory overload. Also gives you an idea of what's hot, who is collecting what, which product should be stayed away from, etc.

If you are ever looking for cards of anyone drop me a line, like I said I don't buy boxes/packs often, but if I do, I'll keep you in mind.

All the vintage stuff obviously is the way to go but it's tough to get into that when a) you're broke and b) you'll be picking up baseball cards of players you never watched. As someone who collects tons of other things, I know that you should never do a hobby with the idea of making money being on your mind.

I love this set so much. Sucks I'll never be able to finish it. A Willie Mays auto just sold for $650 on Ebay.

I 'post' on SportsCardForum (has the best Wrestling section of any board) and I have accounts/lurk on Blowout, WrestlingTradingCards and NonSportsCardForum. For those three I really only browse the for sale/trade sections looking for wrestling or read box breaks to see what's around. I could never get into posting on any of the forums heavily, it'd be like posting with several hundred versions of my dad.

Anyone who thinks they can make money off collecting cards is fooling themselves really. Sure there's dudes out there who break cases of things and flip them on eBay but the hustle required for that is pretty big. likef I were to open a box of TNA 2011 wrestling I know the eBay vaue of the cards are only about $30 max even though the box is $75. I've accepted that I'm sinking money into these things and if I ever do a clear out from time to time and mae back enough for a box or two then I'm happy as hell. Though I wikll say I've had pretty good luck on my box breaks, one WWE Platinum box I opened had two 1/1 cards inside for example.

I'm putting together all my dad's old stuff....and he took interest in it all again. He barely can use technology so I usually go to their house and he has articles printed out and cards sitting next to them and asking about values. I showed him a few messageboards and he was very confused by it all.

in the early 90s my older cousin gave me his box of remaining cards from the 70s and asked me to go through them and "appraise" them, he had THREE wayne gretzky rookies. I was an incredibly honest kid.

Went to my card shop today to pick up a few Brandon Belt singles:

Love that he's wearing his Longhorns uni on this one.

Don't care much for Bowman (too many no-name prospects for me), but I obviously didn't mind shelling out a few dollars for this one.

Also got a Lineage cloth sticker of Votto for a dollar, and actually bought another pack of Lineage (despite telling myself I'd stop buying that set) and pulled a Jason Heyward sticker.

Broke open a Heritage Hobby Box with my buddy today. I actually ended up getting all the good inserts, and also got the relic from him because he wanted the Kemp and Ethier cards I got (for his girlfriend).

score 1995 drinking game was excellent, especially since we were drinking zimas with an (alleged) (alleged) teen rapist

Amblin how do you feel about the 2011 Topps NFL set?

As I told you I initially was going to stay away but the return of the season only reminded me of how much I love football and oh god it's so tempting to go pick up a few NFL packs when I go to my comic store this Wednesday to buy Green Lantern.

its the flagship set, so I like to build it because its cheap and has the stars and rookies. Inserts are kind of meh this year, there is a cool throwback mini. The thing that kind of sucks is since the lockout prevented OTAs and mini camps in the spring there are no photos of the rookies in team gear. Usually they have the big picks photoshopped into the team unis and the smaller names in the practice gear, but this year its photos from the combine so its just Under Armor/Nike stuff. They have the names like Newton and Mallet photoshopped but I think they look like non licensed stuff. Unavoidable because of the lockout but still makes it a little less fun to build.

Hobby boxes will be cheap in a few months so come back to it if you want but for now it might be more fun to feed the need for football cards by spending a couple extra bucks and taking a stab at some packs of the more premium stuff like what Panini puts out or the newer Topps stuff (though I think Inception is just a high end 1 pack per box). You will get better looking cards and have a better shot at the BIG MOJO HITS or even just cool parallels.

The way Cam did yesterday might make even the Topps 2011 stuff way more desirable than last year's product. He may have an edge with collectors over Bradford and Tebow with such a huge start to his career if he keeps this going for the next few weeks.

after yesterday, i bet mcfarlane's regretting that they made newton's nfl 28 figure collector level-only (1-3k). wouldn't be surprised if they announce any day now that nfl 29 will have a black jersey newton as a regular release.
