The Baseball (and other sports) Card Thread

Jesus christ you have to be kidding me.

I'm not a fan of the way Topps enforces the same yearly set design on all its flagship products. The 2011 WWE set this year has the same as the 2011 NFL/MLB set which just doesn't suit the tone of the WWE set. Also, I wouldn't bother with the NFL 2011 standard hobby boxes, you're pretty much just guaranteed two crummy jerseys out of it. Go for the jumbo boxes instead.

Amblin wrote:Hobby boxes will be cheap in a few months so come back to it if you want but for now it might be more fun to feed the need for football cards by spending a couple extra bucks and taking a stab at some packs of the more premium stuff like what Panini puts out or the newer Topps stuff (though I think Inception is just a high end 1 pack per box). You will get better looking cards and have a better shot at the BIG MOJO HITS or even just cool parallels.

I'm seriously contemplating getting a box of Inception in my next hobby box order, the cards looks amazing & all the autographs are on card autos which Topps haven't done in ages. And the chances of hitting something huge are much better than a regular product.

No I haven't. I'm actually gonna try and build the 1986/87 set. Jordan rookie and all.

So I bought a box of 2011 Allen & Ginter's about a month ago and kind of got addicted to baseball cards again. I haven't collected since the mid-90's and I realize it's such a waste of money, but it's been a pretty damn exciting way to kill some time. I've revived my Don Mattingly collection too. Are there any places other than eBay that's good for buying specific or lots of cards?

i used to work in a card shop so i've got about a bajillion. i always tried to buy a pack of every new product (excluding the high end stuff, mostly topped out at the 15-20 a pack range), never pulled anything too spectacular, too many jerry porter jersey cards and luther head autos to count. since moving out of my mom's house and leaving that job, i've left the hobby behind due to finances and lack of storage space. when i moved, i was pretty ok with leaving all my old belongings behind, but my cards are the one thing i want to go back and get someday.

after yesterday, i bet mcfarlane's regretting that they made newton's nfl 28 figure collector level-only (1-3k). wouldn't be surprised if they announce any day now that nfl 29 will have a black jersey newton as a regular release.

just thought i'd post the pic of the cam newton fig that went up on the spawn boards today. hope nobody minds...

some kid stole a few 87 rated rookies from my binder when i brought it to school in 8th grade. bo jackson, maddux, mcgwire are the ones i remember. in retrospect, i feel vindicated because the guy's probably walking around with that on his conscience and the cards aren't worth jack.

I never ever collected sets, but would go through stints collecting different cards; wrestling, comic cards, baseball, basketball but mostly football. I don't even remember buying packs really, I would just go to shops and try to buy rookie cards. I have all of the ones I decided to keep in a binder in my basement. I have like 6 Peyton Mannings, 8 Edgrine James (though he would be the first back to have 2 2,000 seasons and end up as the best ever : / ), numerous Randy Moss cards (2 autographed jersey cards and 3 autographed diamond series rookies from where I met him at the WV state football championship games in 1999), Chad Pennington rookies, Byron Leftwich, a bunch of guys. Marshall was like the Boise State of the early 2000s and they were pretty much responsible for getting me into football, so I tried real hard to get rookies for all of their players that mattered.

I used to collect a lot of random shit as a little kid but I don't think I ever did it the right way. Like, I would decide that I was a comic collector, so I would go into the basement and dig up all my brother's old comics and go through them, but not read them or anything, and suddenly I had a collection. Same thing with cards, until I started buying football rookies and like, Micky Mantle reprints. My brother had some amazing stuff that he stored at his dad's house. I went with him to a card shop so we could sell some stuff. I sold like, 8 pokemon holographics for like $180 and he sold 2 graded-mint Upper Deck Griffey rookies, a graded-mint Topps Walter Peyton and a Mark McGuire rookie for $99 exactly. I was pretty :( because that Griffey card was like THE card that everybody always mentioned when talking about modern collecting and he sold fucking TWO of them, plus some other great cards, for less than I sold something where even then, as a 10 year old, I understood would be completely worthless in like 2 years.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I haven't thought about this stuff in forever.

Was at Target for cough medicine and razors and I went over to the card aisle... jonesing for some football cards and just seeing what they had. Contemplated Topps Platinum but Cam Newton's smiling face was calling me from a blaster of unlicensed Press Pass Football, below him on the box was a tease of Target-exclusive autos and relics. Cam did great Sunday so I thought it might be fun to grab one. What the hell. I got three packs of Topps NFL. My Cam haul was limited to a few of the base cards including one foil card but I did get a BIG MOJO HIT: Jake Locker Target exclusive auto 14/25

It is on-card, but unlicensed so its kind of meh.

Holy hell the Topps Marquee "Titanic Threads" cards are a disaster.

Just looking at the Topps Marquee breaks on the Blowout forum and none of those cards look nice at all.

Fuck those Marquee cards are awful. What's the point in massive patches if they're just blank colours?

Amblin, that Target auto you pulled must be real? Obviously it won't have an NFL logo on it but once it's authenticated you're set. Ebay that sucker.

TOPPS AND THE “SAY HEY KID” BACK TOGETHER AGAIN

Topps announces it has signed a multi-year autograph deal with the legendary “Say Hey Kid”, Willie Mays.

The first offering of Mays’ Autograph will appear in the highly-anticipated 2012 Topps Baseball Series 1, which hits shelves early February. After that, collectors can expect to find the slugger’s autographed cards in products such as Topps Tribute (image attached), Gypsy Queen and much more. In addition, Topps will be issuing a variety of relic cards featuring the Hall of Famer.

The Topps and Mays relationship dates back to the beginning when Willie appeared in the company’s famed 1952 Topps Baseball set. Willie then went on to star on Topps cardboard for another 21 consecutive seasons.

Here in Ireland (UK too obviously) kids buying cards is stronger than ever. So much so that my younger sisters school only allows kids to bring in cards on Fridays and only do trades at lunch. Topps UK's Match Attax soccer collection does crazy numbers, like 2 millions kids are estimated to collect it and they make about £35 million a year off it.
